Once lost to the annals of history, DJs and
collectors have rediscovered the Perception and Today
labels as among the most creative of the early 1970s.
With a vision from owner Jim Porter that championed the
imaginative over the formulaic, the labels amassed a
diverse roster that welcomed jazz, soul, and funk
artists equally, particularly if their music contained
an adventurous edge.
It was Perception that lauched the careers of
Fatback and Black Ivory, released the rare
blaxploitation soundtrack Brother On The Run, and
allowed Dizzy Gillespie, Larry Young and James Moody to
make some of their most creative records. Their
highlights form the core of the twenty-track Doors of
Perception, a heady introduction to the world of
undergound black music.
Fatback's classic "Goin' To See My Baby" and
"Fatbackin'" headline the parade of quirky funk-laden
grooves, and those are just the tip of the iceberg.
Check the manic cover of "Rock Steady" by the legendary
Julius Brockington or Adam Wade and Johnny Pate's
super-rare "Brother on the Run." A minor section of
P-Funk history is unearthed through the inclusion of
"Get Some of This" by the group Madhouse, which
included Gary "Mudbone" Cooper on vocals. Even pop
stars like Bobby Rydell and Debbie Taylor manage to
board the funk train. This is a compilation whose time
has come and is essential for charting the course of
progressive black music.
