This release on the Porto-based Cronica
label comes from Warsaw-born composer
and musician Piotr Kurek, who's possibly
best known for his work as part of
breakcore experimenters Slepcy. Those
familiar with that strand of Kurek's
work would probably consider Lectures to
be something of a departure, combining
elusive electroacoustic transmissions
with fragments of a musical lecture. The
instrumental sequences are riddled with
intrigue and ambiguities, tangling up
reeds, strings and keyboards in the kind
of multi-layered melting pot you might
hear in a Sun Ra record, artfully
combining modern jazz with avant-garde
composition.
