Kill Me Tomorrow is an art-punker's infectious take
on drum and bass -- heavy, rhythmic paws pouncing
under edgy, tender indie rock.
After making a straight-up indie-rock album last
year, vocalist/drummer/programmer Zack Wentz,
bassist/vocalist K8 Wince, and guitarist Dan Wise
discovered the steely, libidinous bump machines
could give, and a new KMT sound was born. Call it
drum ændie bass, Sonic Youthica, or just fat,
heaving bass bleats supporting druggy male/female
vocals, quasi-Eastern guitar exercises, computer
glitches, and filets of delicate distortion. If
Blonde Redhead shared a practice space with a
coked-up Kruder & Dorfmeister, the resulting odd
sweetness would sound a lot like this.
The EP has ten tracks -- five originals, including
four songs and one electronified sample of a
redneck conversation at a Circle K, ingeniously
double tracked so that the speaker seems to be
mocking himself. The other tracks are remixes of
songs by other artists, including two by Black
Heart ProcessionÆs Pall Jenkins, and one by Jimmy
Lavelle (the Album Leaf/Tristeza).
Wentz' somewhat decipherable voice is highly
melodic and slackjawed, drawing power from his
gothic indifference to the chaotic-yet-sensual
world KMT imagines. But through the murk, the
chest-shaking bass and slightly epic guitar
melodies cast hope, as Joy Division's best work
often did.
ItÆs part industrial, part art-punk, part drum æn
bass -- a frighteningly cohesive combination and
the potential soundtrack to the next Bladerunner
film. Don't take your eyes off these cats.
