Welcome Crummy Mystics is Frankie Sparo's third release on constellation,
following a full-length in 2000 and the four-song Arena Hostile in 2001.á
It was recorded/mixed at the hotel2tango in Montreal by Efrim (mt. zion,
godspeed, etc.) on various days throughout 2001 and 2002. Sparo's debut
record, My Red Scare, was comprised mostly of songs played solo,
unadorned, wrought only from guitar, voice & beatbox.á The two years
since have seen forays into broader instrumentation & collaborations with
additional players.á A tour with The Silver Mt. Zion band yielded a set
of string & digital arrangements (some of which are documented on the EP
from 2001, recorded in transit at a VPRO radio session in Amsterdam);
many of these same players contribute to the new songs on Welcome Crummy
Mystics.á Meanwhile, Frankie Sparo's live shows back in Canada have
featured an official second member in the person of N. Moss (piano,
keyboards, backing vox).á Her playing, singing & arranging can be heard
throughout the new record.
As a duo, Sparo's earlier intimacy is preserved on Welcome Crummy
Mystics; the fragility of guitar paired with Moss' piano/organ can be
heard to great effect on "Bright Angel Park" & "This Lie".á With an
additional element - bass in "My Sistr", digital treatments in "Camera" -
the carefully expanded palettes play with countervailing forms: modern
jazz ballad & naive musicbox lullabye.á But Sparo has also assembled
larger ad hoc bands for various set pieces on the album.á Album opener
"Hospitalville" is a fluid, slow-burning swing complete with drums, bass
& trumpets - a brilliant arrangement set pumping by Efrim's heavy
compression treatment .á A hastily assembled men's choir later makes a
brief appearance, as do some digital de/reconstructions, on the record's
two rock songs, "Akzidenz Grotesk" & "Back on Speed".
This diversity of strategies & materials is held together by more than
Sparo's voice - there is a sensibility at work, amidst a minefield of
influences, that prevails in every song, and by extension over the whole
record.á This extension amounts to a very beguiling mood enveloping a
very fine & complex collection of poetic music; we can't think of humbler
or higher praise.á Certainly Sparo can be counted on for top-notch
reflection & erudition in the lyrics dept., so if you enjoy language,
give these a listen.á Sparo is also responsible, with the help of N. Moss
and her Workshop & Guidance Program, for the lovely original artwork on
the album covers.á Listen closely with the lights out.

...ABOUT.................................
rH has been releasing stuff for about three years now. although we
committed ourselves to release only stuff roughly characterized by the terms
punkrock and hardcore we played a big role in the mp3 scene in our three
years of existence. a main concept of rH has always been the idea of a
leaderless group. decisions are met on the base of discussion, rather than
authority and hierarchy. this way of handling issues can be pretty annoying
sometimes, as it can take ages to agree on certain issues and get stuff
done. however, the occasionally lack of organisation is a sacrifice rH is
willing to make, to guarantee individual freedom and thus a relaxed
atmosphere. after all it's amazing that we've kept the machine running for
about three years this way.
recently the founder of rH left the group. that was for sure sad, but to take
this step was probably a good decision for both the group and himself.
farewell, beloved chief-munkey! besides currently undergoing some
structural changes, we are still alive and proud to put out rH release
number 5000 and further!
we know that our releases may contribute to the growing sale loss of record
companies. generally that's no big deal of course, the whining of the record
industry is pathetic and we encourage everyone to pirate their music.
unfortunately the style we release is very often put out by small,
independant labels which work on a very low-profit basis, actually dependent
on record sales. so significant loss of sales in this case doesn't mean some
rockstar is making a few million less on his latest nu-metal album than he
used to, but us loosing the opportunity to listen to good music.
therefore we ask you not to distribute this release on public sites or
peer to peer networks! please do not consider this release as a substitute
to the original, but as a way to promote new bands and check out records
before you buy them.
so we urge you to support the bands, attend their shows, buy their vinyls,
cds and tshirts. so far there's a fairly good network of underground labels
providing us with outputs from awesome bands, your ongoing support is
required to keep the scene alive!
