     │       Columbia Jazz Masterpiece CD-reissue of this 1962 classic        │

     │       from avant-garde pianist Thelonious Monk.  I really              │

     │       couldn't believe this hadn't been released yet.                  │

     │                                                                        │

     │       Monk was known for his off-kilter style and subtle sense         │

     │       of humor.  His compositions, perhaps more than his playing       │

     │       style, are what his legacy has become among jazz                 │

     │       performers and arrangers.                                        │

     │                                                                        │

     │       This album shows how Monk gave completely new meaning to         │

     │       standards like "Tea for Two" using syncopated chord stabs.       │

     │       The dissonant and haunting melodies of Monk-composed             │

     │       ballads like "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "Pannonica" are        │

     │       given here in classic renditions, with the help of tenor         │

     │       saxophonist Charlie Rouse's rough-edged sound.                   │
