 ███     A voice's quest (viajao)

My training as a professional lyrical   ███
 ███     soprano singer taught me that singing is nothing but the process  ███
 ███     of learning to listen. Some years ago I began performing opera    ███
 ███     and Spanish zarzuela, and through Opera Aria I found my European  ███
 ███     roots, accompanied by the everlasting presence of Tomas, my       ███
 ███     Spanish Great-Grandfather. In Seville (Spain) while doing         ███
 ███     musical research at the Archive of the Indies, I searched and     ███
 ███     found ancient missionary words that spoke more about fear of our  ███
 ███     natives and their music, than real awareness. That led me to      ███
 ███     travel throughout Colombia in search of my other native roots.    ███
 ███     The South American cowboy songs, known as "canto recio llanero"   ███
 ███     of Colombia and Venezuela, porro music, cumbia, vallenato,        ███
 ███     mapale, bullernegue, bambuco, guabina, torbellino, bereju and     ███
 ███     rajalenas all taught me that singing has its own rythm, which is  ███
 ███     really about finding common ground between a song's own spirit,   ███
 ███     and the human heart. This is what llaneros -Colombian cowboy      ███
 ███     cenaturs- call viajao.

This quest, this viajao cannot be         ███
 ███     explained in words -it must be sung. It led me to understand      ███
 ███     that singing has its own flesh. When I began to sing as Sophia    ███
 ███     -my true voice- I learned that there is true motion in singing,   ███
 ███     that it is made of blood, earth, water and salt.

 ███     es otra cosa que escuchar. EmpecΘ cantando ≤pera y zarzuela y en  ███
 ███     las arias encontrΘ mis raφces europeas, acompa±ada siempre del    ███
 ███     recuerdo de la voz de Tomßs, mi bisabuelo espa±ol. En el archivo  ███
 ███     de Indias de Sevilla busquΘ viejas palabras misioneras que        ███
 ███     hablaban con mßs temor que entendimiento. Eso me llev≤ a          ███
 ███     recorrer a Colombia entera en busca de mis otras raφces. Los      ███
 ███     cantos de vaquerφa, el canto recio llanero, el porro, la cumbia,  ███
 ███     el vallenato, el mapalΘ, el bullerengue, el bambuco, la guabina,  ███
 ███     el torbellino, el berej· y los rajale±as me ense±aron que el      ███
 ███     canto tiene un ritmo propio, que consiste en encontrar la uni≤n   ███
 ███     entre el espφritu de cada canci≤n, y la voz del coraz≤n. Eso que  ███
 ███     los centauros del llano llaman el viajao.
Ese viaje, ese viajao   ███
 ███     que no puede explicarse con palabras sino tiene que ser           ███
 ███     "cantao", me llev≤ a entender que la voz tiene carne. Cuando      ███
 ███     empecΘ a cantar como canta Sophia -mi verdadera voz-, supe que    ███
 ███     el canto tenφa movimiento y que tiene sangre, tierra, agua y      ███
 ███     sal.
