Release Notes:
Hans-Peter Lindstr°m is someone IÆve written a fair bit about this
year, for his Krautnoodle disco marathon with Prins Thomas, ôIIö, and
especially for his amazing remix of ôAnt 10ö by the Boredoms on ôSuper
Roots 10ö.
Continued...
The latest project from the Norwegian producer, however, is quite
different; a hook-up with Mauritius/Norwegian singer Christabelle
(formerly known as Solale, confusingly) that's a long way from the
awe-inspiring kosmische textures of ôIIö or Lindstr°mÆs pomped-up solo
jam from 2008, ôWhere You Go I Go Tooö.
Instead, ôReal Life Is No Coolö is predicated on how the pair,
according to Lindstr°m, ôFound out that we shared many of the same
musical references, such as Motown, Grace Jones, æ80s soul, Vanity 6
etc.ö Plenty of it, consequently, sounds like a high-gloss,
high-glamour kind of æ80s electronic pop û though distinctly more
cosmpolitan than a lot of the æ80s revivalism thatÆs been busy in the
UK charts this year.
Often, it feels like Lindstr°m is simultaneously respecting and
deconstructing his inspirations. From the first skid of reversed babble
that begins ôLooking For Whatö, through a clutch of tracks that sound
like long, sultry preliminaries, extended teases that stretch out in
unexpected ways, itÆs clear heÆs applying a sort of radical techno
science to compacted pop ideas. I guess a useful comparison might be
Vladislav DelayÆs explorations of vocal house music under his Luomo
guise.
Delay, though, hasnÆt made an album as strong as this in years.
Christabelle is a great, breathy frontwoman û excelling on manicured
prowls like ôLovesickö û but itÆs still hard not to focus on what
Lindstr°m is up to. Listening closely to, say, ôSo Much Funö, thereÆs
still much of the feints and detailing that heÆs brought to earlier
records, albeit deployed with less bombast.
You can hear a touch of Grace Jones in ChristabelleÆs voiceover on the
gorgeous ôMusic In My Mindö, but the æ80s soul strain is much stronger,
especially that of Jam & Lewis. The closing ôHigh & Lowö, in
particular, is a crystalline slow jam that reminds me a little of
CherrelleÆs ôSaturday Loveö, which is just fine.
ThereÆs also a neat Summer/Moroder pastiche, ôLetÆs Practiseö. I
realise some of this may be a hard sell to some of you, not least
articulating the pleasures of ôBaby CanÆt Stopö when the reference
points seem to be ôWanna Be StartinÆ Somethingöand Miami Sound
MachineÆs ôDr Beatö. But I donÆt think itÆs just residual affection for
Lindstr°m that makes me like this.
Limited Edition 3CD features a 40 minute take of christmas standard
'Little Drummer Boy' which has to be heard to be believed. The other
extra cd features 6 remixes from Aeroplane, Prins Thomas, Idjut Boys,
Sally Shapiro, Dolle Jolle and Fan Death.
