│ Jersey's Jazziacs became Kool & the Gang in 1969. Signed │
│ to newly-formed De-Lite label, with whom they remained │
│ until 1988, Gang debuted with eponymous instrumental. │
│ Further, modestly successful JB/Sly-influenced singles │
│ paved way for '74's Wild & Peaceful. Gold-selling album - │
│ seventh in five years - spawned classics Funky Stuff, │
│ Jungle Boogie and Hollywood Swinging; all U.S. smashes, │
│ later heavily sampled (another song, Summer Madness was │
│ successfully remodelled by Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince). │
│ Ironically, group floundered during disco, despite │
│ featuring on globe-conquering Saturday Night Fever │
│ soundtrack. Revival occurred in late '79, with Ladies' │
│ Night single and album, featuring new vocalist James │
│ Taylor and producer Eumir Deodato. Previously wild funk │
│ evolved into straightforward dance, epitomised by double- │
│ platinum U.S. no. 1 Celebration and infectious U.K. no. 3 │
│ Get Down On It, while mellow side yielded transatlantic │
│ Top 5 ballad Joanna. U.K. track record was particularly │
│ impressive: 19 consecutive hits between 1979 and '85. JT │
│ quit in '88 for disastrous solo career; replaced by vocal │
│ trio boasting ex-Dazz Band singer Skip Martin. Although │
│ chart success has dwindled away, band remain popular live │
│ attraction in Europe. Bell can claim creditfor two younger │
│ acts: he guided Color Me Badd to stardom and son Hakim │
│ leads swing band POV" │
