Okay, I'm not a hasch head, but if this is the music those stoned
hipsters are playing at their party, I'll stop by just for the tunes.
Great stuff here that definitely calls to mind acid-drenched hipness
and swanky cocktail tunes. Bob Crewe opens things up with the funky
"Pygars Persecution/Black Queen's Beads," which is so thick with fuzz
guitar that it'd be just as comfortable in the background of some
drugged-out 1960s biker party.
Klaus Doldinger's track wastes no time trotting out the sitar that
was required for all trippy lounge tunes. You can just see the spaced
out mod chicks and Twiggy-lloking types dancing to it all tranced
out. Other notable artists include Serge Gainsbourg and the usually
square (but always talented) Nelson Riddle.
His track is the straightest of the bunch, but it's still a beautiful
mix of horns and soaring strings from the man that brought us the
theme to Route 66 and "Your ZOWIE Face." His presence here is just a
reminder of how varied and eclectic the music commonly dismissed as
"lounge" or "kitsch music" can be. Gabor Szabo's "Sophisticated
Wheels" mixes a trippy beat with the sitar and something that wanders
very close to surf guitar.
Phil Moore's "Batucada" is a Latin-flavored number with female
vocals. You may not know the name, but you'll recognize the song as
soon as you hear it. All in all, a superb collection of curiosities
that cover jazz, funk, lounge, Latin, acid jazz, and all sorts of
other stuff people have yet to find a category for.
My only complaint is that there are no liner notes. More information
about these artists, many of them fairly obscure, is always nice.
