Bhob Rainey's saxophone playing eschews
standard techniques; in fact, it rarely involves what
have become common extended techniques.
Yet, his sounds have a peculiar directness,
integrated into a music that is at once meditative and
disquieting. The saxophone is forgotten
as one becomes immersed in pure tones, metallic
chords, palpable breath, and always that primal silence, both
mesmerizing and volatile. Rainey's music, although entirely
acoustic, is in close kinship with
electronic music, as evidenced in his collaborations
with Gunter Mueller, Lionel Marchetti, Kevin Drumm, Ralf
Wehowsky, Jerome Noetinger, and Jason Lescalleet, to name a
few. With trumpeter Greg Kelley, he is the cofounder of the
unlikely improv supergroup, nmperign, and is also the founder
and director of the premier electroacoustic ensemble, the BSC.
Percussionist Gunter Muller has been playing a unique drum
set with a mobile pick-up and microphone system
of his own invention since 1981. The system allows
hand-generated sounds on drums and percussion to be modulated
electronically. Since 1998 minidiscs are included in his
electronic set. He has played and recorded with a large number
of fine musicians, from Jim O'Rourke to Christian Marclay,
from Butch Morris to Otomo Yoshihide. Muller was a
founding member of the trio Nachtluft, with Andres
Bosshard and Jacques Widmer, who have been creating
sound-installations and sound-architecture. Muller currently
works in th electronic quartet Poire_z with Erik M and Voice
Crack, and in the trio Direct Chamber with Michel Doneda and
Fabrice Charles. He plays now and then in duo with Taku
Sugimoto, with Jason Kahn, and with Le Quan Ninh, in trio
with Taku Sugimoto and Keith Rowe, with Voice Crack +, u.o.
In 1990, he founded the independent record label For 4 Ears
