This is the second release from Inner Gravity Records, a jewel case with
coloured four page booklet, sparse on design and imagery save the symbollic
ouroborous and symbol of venus/isis, the eight pointed star.
╓nd comprises of nicholas szumowski.
To target the track order as presented on the cover, there is a
perceptible shift in the entire album's listening experience with the
placing of the ever-intensifying 7 & 8 tracks at the beginning of the
whole track listing. What is saliently described is the tunnel-esque
pipings of organic moments mutable as they are malleable to be
accompanied by military insistence giving some rein to the gloom-shrouded
chorus's. That it is ritualistic is made clear with darknening of the
chthonic ululations and more rhythmic canter from growing percussive
elements.
With track one the crescendo has passed and the music, so keenly fettered
to the excoriating drums, slips and tumbles from view leaving ritual to
more primal terrene sussurations. Percussive elements creep into the
primordial haze, forming small rhythmic congeries that hustle in shadowed
corners. Subtelty the music weaves a complex extrapolation into evolving
mesh textures of syncopated sound that do little to break the flow of track
two, that climaxes in a maelstrom of where incantations float on an
unsettled bed of richoting and hypnotic motifs. Track three evolves the
blend of tone that forms a dense matress throughout the entire album;
dancing dolorous cadences with ritual and strong yet well suited
electronica. Not that this creeping towards sequenced exacts its measure
of 'stripping away of the dark', if you will, as track four squarely
steps back into its rightful bloated darkness; electronic signals leach
through the atmosphere, veiled ribbons of noise drape like layers of
altocumulus that shift tone colouring the moment's emotive potency,
silence bringing quiet space and the fear of the unknown as all remnants
of ritual are lost in the void. That abysm simmers in track five as
a lulling and drowsy rolling underscores the most sleep/dream-inducing
moment of the album, one that tickles throughout in gaggles of supressed
cachhinations until the last moments of the extended track rasp in the
industrial clamour of drums and metal strikes. The last track, track six
begins in barely-stifled darkness and in a matter of moments floresce
with pan-fluted sadness that ushers the end in a final and haunting
foresight of the minatory poundings in tracks seven and eight - a fitting
tragedy of sorts.
╓nd maintains an experimental progression throughout the whole album,
using motifs as cornerstones for divagation. Given the length of the album
it makes up for its ambiguity with consistent yet appealing mutations.
