The 2004 documentary about the making of Faces has great anecdotes from
the cast and crew about, of course, the incredible freedom of the
Cassavetes process, but also gets into the technique behind that
spontaneity. He was so disciplined in terms of capturing something
magical happening on screen, he'd refuse to shoot if something within
the scene didn't feel right. When Seymour Cassel began, he refused
to roll a foot of film for several days, until finally Cassel came
in like gangbusters (and his maniacal presence, his taunting laugh,
proves it was all worth the wait). Gena Rowlands and Lynn Carlin
were both pregnant during shooting, but Cassavetes had no scruples
about putting them to workùand hard, putting the movie first. The
actresses don't seem to have minded (and Carlin got fired from her
job as Robert Altman's assistant because she was spending too much
time with Cassavetes). Director of photography Al Ruban also discusses
his own artistic technique, as well as some of the favors they got from
Cassavetes's friends (Haskell Wexler loaned them an entire lighting
truck's worth of gear). All and all, the documentary gives a vivid
sense of these people, their times.
