Debut release from Skean Dhu Recordings. Presented in jewel case with
simple, four-page booklet designed tastefully.
A brief fragment of Gregorian chant launches into a pulsing ritual rhythm
spiralling in sussurations of noise, an interleaving sequence of feedback
that draws Dolmen away from any pigeon-holing of dark ambience. 'In the
Heat' yaws furnace-like but refrains from repetition whose very inferno
raises oneself up on the fans of heat into 'Clouds of a Christ', yet
despite the peaceful seeming title, Dolmen evoke no moments for reflection,
the musical phrases segueing from one to the next in ever-evolving morsels
and set precedent for the remaining tracks.
Tension within the music is guided by the interaction between the duo,
Steven K. Smith and Jason Sloan, allowing for journeys of harmony and
disharmony within each of the artist's respective, and sometimes
contrasting, visions. Ethnic gargling press into naturally evoked ambience
creating grainy, coalesced sound defined by the vast repertoire of each
artist, to quote;
"Steven K. Smith: programming, percussion, bodran, tri-toms, loops,
samples, keyboards, bagpipes, tin whistles and voices.
"Jason Sloan: atmospheres, guitar, e-bow, keyboards, programming, short
wave radio, butterknife, & sound processing."
Fans of noise will find some solace in industrialized buildings while the
haunting ghosts within will appeal to those with softer ears. Percussive
elements are but heartbeats away, whether smothered in fog or raucously
prevalent. Each track varies within itself and to each other yet this
is definitely an ambient release that could appeal to many a listener, not
just the ambient purist. So often are the transitions this album passes
quickly from track to track and despite it's hour long presentation feels
but half of that.
