│I don't know if anyone saw the movie Kla$h, but │
│I'd venture to guess that even fewer people │
│bought the soundtrack. From what I can gather, │
│the movie focuses on Giancarlo Esposito as an │
│American reporter who gets involved with a │
│dancehall woman (Jasmine Guy!) in Jamaica. │
│While not sounding quite as bad as the │
│Jamaican voodoo plot of Steven Seagal's Marked │
│For Death, I think I'll pass. The soundtrack, │
│however, does have some nice elements. Of │
│course, dancehall is the dominant sound on │
│Kla$h, with Garnett Silk's high-energy │
│"Complaint" being the strongest of that style. │
│Even Steel Pulse contributes a │
│dancehall-rhythmed track in "I Spy," but its │
│catchy up-tempo melody remains consistent with │
│the band's earlier, more rootsy hits. A │
│couple of hip-hop tunes are decent │
│-- "First Blood" by Prince Midas and │
│Brian & Tony Gold, a sultry R&B/hip-hop │
│dancehall number, and "Nastee" by Born │
│Jamericans and K.O. Boys, which would be │
│infinitely better without the latter's weak │
│rapping. "Luv 2 Luv U" by Jasmine Guy herself │
│meanwhile is a horribly out of place │
│pop/R&B/dance stinker that brings any momentum │
│this album may have built to a screeching halt. │
│Why do I get the sense that it was in Guy's │
│contract that she would do the movie if she could │
│also have a song on the soundtrack? A couple │
│of more mellow, rootsy tracks that help buoy │
│Kla$h: Lorna Bennett's classic "Breakfast in │
│Bed" and Loose Caboose's version of the │
│Mikey Bennett-penned "Monday Morning Blues," │
│which is possibly superior to that Bunny Ruggs │
│version that Bennet produced for his Grafton │
│4x4 album. Despite this, mediocrity reigns │
│on this album, with sub-par efforts from Shaggy, │
│Chaka Demus & Pliers, Snow, and Cobra. │
│Bounty Killer and Ninjaman meanwhile │
│contribute low-quality live performances │
│that an only marginally be described as songs, │
│as they are comprised largely of crowd-prodding │
│rambling interspersed with occassional music. │
