▓████▓▌ modern jazz stance in his original compositions, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and a band that can effectively implement those ▓▌
▓████▓▌ notions. Tenor saxophonist Matthias Erlewein and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ trombonist Nils Wogram take the themes of Ross to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ heart and mind, while rhythm mates Dietmar Fuhr ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (bass) and Jochen Ruckert (drums) power the band ▓▌
▓████▓▌ professionally on these ten tracks. The most ▓▌
▓████▓▌ impressive writing of Ross comes about full steam ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ahead for the multi-metered, complex riffs of "By ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Any Means Necessary" and the ultra-modern chart ù ▓▌
▓████▓▌ horns flashing, darting and jumping about ù of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Clapham Junction." Roos also proves an adept ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pianist on the latter tune's bop bridge. These two ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pieces exemplify the best of the leader's highly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ developed concept. Horns speak out, piano and bass ▓▌
▓████▓▌ talk back, drums chatter in rolls and splashes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ during "In Case You Haven't Heard"; soaring horns ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and reverent tones inform "Hymnus"; and a mostly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ waltzing easy swing sets the tone on "Sea Greene," ▓▌
▓████▓▌ handing off to an urgent second section and workout ▓▌
▓████▓▌ for Ruckert. An inquisitive solo bass intro images ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a beautiful, pristine snow layer on "Winteraire"; a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ miminalistic 7/4 piano-bass line under a lovely ▓▌
▓████▓▌ horn chart for "Ology Elegy" merges to a 6/8 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ostinato on "Neck-tied"; and the repeated three ▓▌
▓████▓▌ piano chords on "Rondo #3" buoy drifting melodies ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and happy-sad moods. The band can also swing hard ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on the bopping, post-modern "Let Me Do It" (Not ▓▌
▓████▓▌ You) in a fashion that combines not only the best ▓▌
▓████▓▌ American tradition, but a European aesthetic that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ bodes well for the future of forward motion and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ excitement in jazz. Ross is quite a jazz statesman ▓▌
▓████▓▌ at such a young age, and this is a dynamite debut ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recording that should have curious and veteran ▓▌
