A very nice reggae collection. Some of the production is not
so good though. Some tracks sound bad even on the CD, but the
music makes up for it.

Oldest of eleven children, Serges Kassy was born in 1962 at Treichville,
a district of Abidjan, in C⌠te d'Ivoire, between the lagoon and the ocean.
In other words, the poor ghetto. He was nicknamed Sergeant because it
sounded like Serges.
In 1980, while still at school, he formed a group called The Roots,
making his dΘbut as composer-performer. During the eighties he appeared
on the highly popular radio programmes "Podium", "Radio Vacances" and
"Vacances Culture", put out by young producers at the national radio and
television studios (the RTI).
He dropped his accountancy studies in 1990 to devote himself to music,
not able to see himself in an office, far away from the social problems
he was denouncing. He made his first album the same year, "I'm Proud",
an immediate hit with seventy thousand legal copies sold in C⌠te d'Ivoire,
as well as an estimated three hundred thousand pirate copies.
Serges released "Descripation" in 1992, thirty thousand official copies
sold. Five clips between 1990 and 1993, three of them coproductions with
the Abidjan French Cultural Centre. The "John Bri" clip won him the
African Music Award for the best clip of 1993. In 1994 he won the Wembele
platinum prize, award by PathΘ-Marconi for the most cassette sales in
C⌠te d'Ivoire. During this period Seges was giving regular concerts
around the country, as well as in Togo in 1993 and, in November 1994,
three concerts in Benin including one at the Cotonou stadium.
Serges Kassy's music is C⌠te-d'Ivoire-flavoured roots reggae. As he puts
it, "C⌠te d'Ivoire is the third promised land of reggae, after Jamaica
and London," recalling that Ivoirean Alpha Blondy is a major world reggae
star-and also his own "big brother", for whom Serges supplied warm-up at
the Zenith in Paris in 1994. For Serges, the search for the melody provides
the theme. He shares with Burning Spear and Bob Marley the belief that
commitment and mesage come first, and the music follows.
Serges has often been defined as a "national artist", whose success will
never go beyond C⌠te d'Ivoire's borders. Ghetto origins maybe-but this
reggae performer sings most often in Nouchi, the patois of the roughs of
Abidjan who get by any way they can. Committed author-singer-composer,
Serges tries to be "the eyes, the ears and the mouth of the people".
His lyrics-"Social Security," "I'm Black, I'm Proud," and particularly
"Dead Kid Don't Fear No Knife" and "I'm Disgusted"-are anchored firmly
in social and political African reality. One song, with remarkably direct
words, "Your Ass Is Hanging Out, Today There's a Sheet", derides officials
whose absolute power is being challenged by the people, whose true
personalities are being revealed ("your ass is hanging out"), and who are
in for trouble, with accounts to render ("today there's a sheet"). The song
was banned at once, and made Serges enormously popular. In his lyrics,
he prefers the familiar images of home reality to imported clichΘs.
"It is high time I spoke, I am disgusted.
All the sons of Africa who have tried
to work for Africa
have been imprisoned or killed
Only those who have played the Occidental card
to despoil my people are still in power.
I'm thinking of Samory, of Mandela, of Steve Biko, of KwamΘ N'Kruma.
I believe Africa has been misdirected
and we must talk about it
Because it disgusts me-today I am disgusted."
"Min RΘvoltΘ" ("I'm Disgusted")
