Life: 1881 - 1945
BΘla Bart≤k lived an almost stereotypical
artistÆs life. He was a sickly child who
felt isolated from other children and whose
early fascination with music was, in part, a
substitute for human relationships outside
the family. Later, his creative originality
was so strong that it prevented his works
from achieving widespread public recognition
in his lifetime, although they always
elicited the deepest admiration of
connoisseurs. As a result, he often lived
from hand to mouth, but he refused to
compromise his artistic ideals.
Bart≤k was born on March 25, 1881 in the
Hungarian town of Nagyszentmikl≤s, which now
belongs to Romania and is called Sinnicolau
Mare. His schoolteacher parents were
accomplished amateur musicians. He received
advanced musical education at the Budapest
Academy of Music and became an outstanding
pianist and piano teacher, but he refused to
teach composition, for fear that it would
diminish his originality. At 28, he married
a 16 year-old girl, whom he later divorced,
and at 42, he married a 22 year-old pupil,
Ditta Pßsztory, with whom he frequently
appeared in performances of his works for
piano duo; each marriage produced one son.
With his friend and fellow-composer Zoltßn
Kodßly, Bart≤k became a pioneer in the field
of ethnomusicology, collecting and studying
the authentic folk music of Hungary and
several other countries; this music
influenced his own compositional style. In
addition to the two masterpieces recorded
here, Bart≤kÆs greatest compositions include
six magnificent string quartets ù probably
the greatest body of works in this medium to
be produced by any composer since Beethoven
ù the ballets The Wooden Prince and the
stunning Miraculous Mandarin, the
Divertimento for string orchestra, the
haunting, psychologically probing opera
BluebeardÆs Castle, the remarkable Cantata
profana, based on Romanian folksongs, the
dynamic Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion
and various concertos, among them three fine
works for his own instrument, the piano, and
a superb Violin Concerto, as well as other
chamber music and many compositions for solo
piano.s
In later years, in self-imposed exile from
fascist-dominated Hungary, increasingly ill
and living in straitened circumstances in
New York from 1940 (despite a minor
appointment at Columbia University); Bart≤k
was deeply pessimistic about the future. He
died in New York, of leukemia ù and in near
poverty ù on September 26, 1945, at the age
of 64.

by groups who would refuse to release anything but current
year music.Well since that time we have been rocking the
scene with classic rock rips.We have made classic music
mainstream in the scene and have been on top in that area as
the number one group in classic rips. We finished 2001 with
3800 rips.As we moved forward in 2002 we found we were also
releasing alot of quality 2k2 rips and saw that we were competing
in that area.In 2002 we finished with over 5000 rips.In 2003 we
plan to move forward and continue to release "THE NEW STUFF" and
strive to be on top in 2k3 rips.We will also continue to remain
on top like we have for 2 years in the classic rock scene.
