▓ Thanks to a few forward thinking producers setting ▓
▓ the example and the newfound ability for one to ▓
▓ construct and manipulate sound from the comfort of ▓
▓ their home, a new breed of electronic musician is ▓
▓ climbing from the woodwork. While some still stick to ▓
▓ either side of the fence, rock musicians everywhere ▓
▓ have begun twiddling with loops and fabricated beats ▓
▓ while electronic producers have started to embrace ▓
▓ guitars, drums and other live instruments to ▓
▓ compliment the beeps and blips of their computers. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ ▓
▓ ▓
▓ Primarily raised on indie rock, Neil Haverty has ▓
▓ joined the crossover with The Boston Letter; taking ▓
▓ an interest in blending machine and man-made noises ▓
▓ to fashion a new outlet for his songs. Citing artists ▓
▓ like Bjork, Prefuse 73 and The Notwist as impetus for ▓
▓ his exploration into computer-based music, Haverty ▓
▓ released The Boston Letter EP in July of this year; ▓
▓ compiling his first seven productions onto a ▓
▓ 25-minute mini-album. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ ▓
▓ ▓
▓ Mixing samples from some of his favourite indie rock ▓
▓ bands (including Toronto-based acts like From Fiction ▓
▓ and The Sea Snakes as well as international acts like ▓
▓ Mogwai, Hella and Trans AM) with collected sounds ▓
▓ from a handheld recorder (including wet shoes on ▓
▓ slippery floors, bulk candy shakers, clocks falling ▓
▓ off of walls, drunken bottle clinking and much more), ▓
▓ HavertyÆs main intent was to make an electronic ▓
▓ record that didnÆt rely on stock drum machine samples ▓
▓ and four-on-the-floor dance beats. Exploring odd time ▓
▓ signatures and unruly rhythmic patterns, the EP tends ▓
▓ to have more in common with the complicated sound of ▓
▓ math rock than it does with any sort of electronic ▓
▓ music.s ▓

▓ ▓
▓ A music journalist by day, Haverty recently jumped ▓
▓ ship to Sydney, Australia to work with a national ▓
▓ trade paper and to test his music in a foreign ▓
▓ territory. Putting his band (the time-shifting rock ▓
▓ trio Nouns) on hold until he heads back to Toronto at ▓
▓ Christmas time, Haverty is heart-set on playing as ▓
▓ many shows down under as possible (as The Boston ▓
▓ Letter and also in solo acoustic mode under his own ▓
▓ name). Haverty has already begun work on a second ▓
▓ Boston Letter EP which he plans to release as soon as ▓
▓ he arrives home. A remix album is scheduled to be ▓
▓ released soon enough (with many of HavertyÆs friends ▓
▓ and favourite producers reworking the songs) and ▓
▓ plans are in the works to create a live Boston Letter ▓
▓ band, complete with a string section, a choir and a ▓
▓ full backing band. ▓

▓ At just 20 years of age, thereÆs no doubt that this ▓
▓ EP is just the first of many electronic experiments ▓
▓ for Haverty. Though his heart still lies among seedy ▓
▓ rock bars and amplifiers, the computer has become one ▓
▓ of the multi-instrumentalistÆs most important tools. ▓
▓ The lines are blurring and the misconceptions ▓
▓ cleared; rock and electronic music are indeed ▓
▓ compatible. ▓
