Singer/guitarist Gabe Ruschival has a soft, appealing, melancholic voice with
which he delivers infectious melodies throughout the record. Ruschival's
greatest gift, it seems, is his ability to infuse appealing melodies into
anything he sings. His vocals sit atop his own driving guitars, as well as a
heavy backbeat, synths, and organ, which are all deftly provided by Jeremy
Lutito. Many tracks, including "Not Lived Out," "Failed Medication," "End of the
World," and "Sundrenched" showcase DBC's unique ability to create a big
guitar-driven dance-pop sound with just two musicians. Songs like "Bottle,"
"Yesterday/Tomorrow," and "Lullaby," however, recall the superb organic vibe of
Zero 7 and Kings of Convenience. The standout track is "Broken Machine," a call
to action against the big (corporate) machines that make cattle of us allùDBC is
calling for revolution. But as amazing as this debut record is, it's not
perfect. Indeed, although Lutito is no doubt keeping busy by providing the
drums, synths, organ, etc., the fact that he does not sing harmonies is a
setback, and it's perhaps the missing piece that is liable to hold DBC back from
becoming an international success. Indeed, as good as these guys are, there's
still room to grow. Ruschival's vocals sound thin at times, and some of the high
notes sound nearly out of reach for him. Better vocal production could remedy
much of the latter. However, Lutito can improve the overall sound tremendously
by laying down some harmonies. Still, this debut is an outstanding record from
Disappointed by Candy.
