Dear Nora are one of those acts that oscillates between
full-band manifestations and solo ventures. I don't know what
creative force Katy Davidson sounds like with a band backing
her, but I can tell you that she certainly doesn't need it.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Mountain Rock is one of
the prettiest lo-fi folk records I've ever come across.
The seventeen short tracks that make up Mountain Rock are
mostly sparse acoustic numbers, occasionally accented by
electric guitar, hand claps and found noises. The songs fade
and meander into one another, and on at least one occasion a
song cuts off mid measure, immediately segueing into the next
cut. The individual tunes' brevity works to the album's
overall advantage; the melodies entice, then vanish. If you
miss a good bit, you might as well rewind.
Davidson's approach to song structure separates Mountain Rock
from a typical folk album. Showing remarkable restraint, she
resists the typical verse/chorus/verse/chorus formula. Some
of her melodies are such gems that no-one would fault her if
she repeated a few choruses -- but instead, she offers songs
that clock in at around a minute each, interspersed with
instrumental interludes that mostly consist of dissonant
guitar or wandering piano.
Lyrically, Davidson is sometimes silly and unabashedly
sentimental, but she pulls it off. Her songs seem to be as
much about Platonic friendship as they are about romantic
love, which saves the record from coming across as overly
sappy. Her vocal delivery also contributes to her lyrical
success: she sounds vulnerable and sincere, but never
annoyingly twee. Several of the vocal tracks are whispered,
and the frequent use of doubled vocals recalls the intimacy
of early Elliott Smith.
Add Dear Nora to the list of artists, like Iron and Wine and
Sufjan Stevens, who are casting folk rock in a unique and
interesting light. By its very nature, Mountain Rock will
never demand the attention it deserves, but this soft, gentle
record will meander its way into a lot of hearts.
