Founded by RenΘ Jacobs in 1977 for a series of recordings with
harmonia mundi France, Concerto Vocale soon built up a
reputation on the European musical scene as a major force in
the rediscovery of the repertoire of Baroque chamber music for
voices. Alongside RenΘ Jacobs, the ensemble secured the
services of musicians of the front rank, among them William
Christie, Sigiswald and Wieland Kuijken, Konrad Junghaenel,
and Jaap Ter Linden.
After such revelatory productions as CestiÆs LÆOrontea at the
Innsbruck Festival, RenΘ Jacobs enlarged the ensemble into a
genuine orchestra capable of mounting Italian operas of the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, some of which have met
with immense success: CavalliÆs Xerse, Giasone, La Calisto and
Eliogabalo, CestiÆs LÆArgia, and of course the three surviving
operas of Monteverdi. LÆincoronazione di Poppea recently
returned to the ensembleÆs repertoire in a new production by
David McVicar at the ThΘΓtre des Champs-╔lysΘes in Paris,
which will be revived in January 2006 at the Deutsche
Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and in March of the
same year at the ThΘΓtre Royal de La Monnaie in Brussels,
while Il ritorno dÆUlisse in patria will be seen in a new
production in Berlin in January 2005.
A formidable tool for the exploration of its chosen
repertoire, Concerto Vocale remains closely linked with the
imaginative musical career of RenΘ Jacobs. Most of the
ensembleÆs recordings have obtained major international
prizes, among them the International Record Critics Award,
Edison Award, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Grand Prix de lÆ
AcadΘmie Charles Cros, Diapason dÆOr, Cecilia Award, and the
Vivaldi Prize of the Cini Foundation.
