Things in herds first shuffled awkwardly
into existence in the latter part of 1999
in a Brighton flat when Pete Lush
borrowed an 8 track recorder from a
friend. After plugging a battered
microphone into a hole in the back he set
about writing and recording some squeaky
little tunes enlisting the help of the
mysterious Miss Ping on backing vocals,
harmonica and pictures.
The songs collapsed into a semblance of
order and soon an album, 'Pardon?' had
insinuated itself into being. Without
further hesitation they borrowed a
computer for an afternoon, gathered up
the spillage from their leaky minds and
launched their website in a flurry of
lonely pig pictures and clapping.
A collection of 14 mostly acoustic songs
'Pardon?' immediately began gathering
admirers amongst those who like their sad
songs to be accompanied by the sound of
falling mic stands and unruly beeping
things -drawing comparison to
Sparklehorse, Will Oldham, Smog and,
erm.. Bryan Ferry. One of these people
was Academy Award winning filmmaker Ron
Judkins who, having heard a copy of
'Pardon?' that had somehow become lost in
Hollywood decided it was just the thing
for his forthcoming movie. The song 'Like
Me' was featured on the soundtrack of
'The Hi-Line' and the curious worldwide
traveled to the website to hear it and
look at the new donkey pictures that were
issuing from Miss Ping's singularly
peculiar mind.
For the rest of the year the Things
progressed through a series of gigs and
no small number of mechanical horses.
Meanwhile Pete was busy writing and
recording the songs that would become the
'I Can Dancing And Walking' LP. Drawing
it's name from the slogan of a cheap
mass-produced bird puppet from Pete's
childhood it would contain more drums and
cats along with a pig-based mystery about
the Great Wall of China. This time the
TiH studio had expanded and he was able
to use a genuine drumstick instead of a
wooden spoon for those all important drum
fills.s
In 2002 the album was given a release in
the UK by the Norwegian label Trust Me
records. Work is currently well underway
on the new Things in Herds album
tentatively titled 'Hymns for Mu-Boss'.
Mu-Boss, for the uninitiated, is a kind
of indifferent ape god with a big crack
in his face.
'I Can Dancing and Walking' will be
released throughout the US by Undecided
Records Feb 2004.
