Not being acquainted with the Finnish pop scene, this comes with no
preconceptions, so I rely on Scandinavian pop I am familiar with to
find reference points û the Wannadies, the Cardigansà somewhere
between these two is the pop of Treeball. Having 2 vocalists helps:
Astrid has a lovely clear voice and when she duets with Nick as on
æBolivian AdventureÆ the permafrost must begin to melt. Exposure to
this record could definitely cure S.A.D; æDefinition of PopÆ almost
describes itself perfectly and launches into a chorus Teenage Fanclub
would be proud of. æBlueÆ finds Astrid on the Fender Rhodes turning
out a classic country tearjerker in Scando-pop style almost as though
sheÆs whispering in your ear. æNothing Left on the ShelfÆ is as
country style as a chocolate and raisin bar in a gingham wrapper, a
lonesome harmonica calling like a lonely tree top crow. The ballad
æBeginningÆ has a superb treated piano and angelic voiced coda as the
two voices sing a lullaby to each other a la Tom Waits and Crystal
Gayle on the æOne from the HeartÆ soundtrack. Best of all is
æFulsomeÆ which brings together the pop sensibility with superb
harmonies and a guitar that rings like the Railtrack complaints line.
Spikier is æThe Bomb,Æ 50 seconds of pop tinged punk, leading to
another excellent Astrid led song æYour Dream,Æ slinky with Groovebox
and as seductive as a pout and silk. Finnish record of the year so far
- all round excellence.
