This latest Cotton Goods release is the handiwork of Jonny
Russell of Clickits, and arrives as a follow-up to his
eponymous EP for the Mobeer imprint, which vanished in a flash
upon its 2008 release. This being a Cotton Goods production,
quantities are even more scarce for Mycrocosmycs, with a
limited edition of 100 and housed within a hand-crafted new
variation on the now familiar library book packaging. The
customarily curious presentation really resonates with the
mysterious content, and the first piece ushers in the disc
with a minor-key wash of hiss and distant tones. Taking a
little more shape, 'Chapter 2' sounds as though it's been
clipped together from blank tape noise and springy, '80s toy
synthesizer noise, while the third piece is more like an early
analogue electronic exercise, launching forth into a
knockabout blip-scape. Although this theme is continued with
the excellent 'Chapter 5', which verges on Raymond Scott-style
experimentation with sound design, there's more going on here
than ear-pleasing noodling. As the twenty-minute set
progresses you start to encounter audio that somehow alludes
to washed-out Betamax-scapes - especially on the decrepit tape
machine warbles of chapters 7 and 8. You have to wonder where
all these sounds are coming from, but because there's
something evasively minimal about Russell's compositions
you're left guessing, which only makes the Then Dof experience
all the more captivating.
