Those of you who looked closely enough at the first Dual Purpose 12"
a couple of years ago would have noticed a small Gescom logo tucked
away somewhere at the edge of its sparse centre label. The common
assumption since then has been that Dual Purpose is another low-key
Gescom alias deployed to confuse the diggers and challenge those
completists who make it their business know this sorta s**t. This
second EP lands with us in much the same vein : low-key, fuss-free
and surrounded by the necessary quota of mystery - these people know
exactly what you want. There are four tracks on-board, the A-Side in
a slouchy squashed hip-hop vein, the flip accelerating the breaks to
a more destroyed shuffle. The opening title track, however, is by far
and away the dopest cut on offer - an immense take on reconfigured
late night b-boy beats rotating around a gargantuan slowed-down
break, underwater low-end and some treated distant alien narration -
a mighty track that has just slayed us in here for the last 24 hours
since it turned up. "Lickedlonger" follows like an extended intro -
one of those tracks that keeps you waiting from start to finish for a
breakdown that just never turns up - that same muffled voice tagged
along for the ride. "Rubbaband" on the flip is more robust and
extreme - the breaks augmented by some tight classical sample editing
and a beat that sounds like "Cash EP" era Push Button Objects sped up
and mutilated by an experienced hand - wicked bizzness. In all,
really good work that's imbued with the tag of greatness by that
