Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention by Pitchfork Staff:
Despite the changing sentiment towards gas-guzzlers, this Barcelona group
retains a fascination with the cosmopolitan age of the car. The obvious
reference point is its name, which recalls John DeLorean's boutique auto
start-up, just as it did the extravagant culture of early-80s dance that
Delorean's disco rhythms highlight. The second is a little less obvious to
Americans: The record is inspired by the real life Ayrton Senna, the Brazilian
Formula One world champion who used racing as a metaphor for life. Obscuring
some of the dance-punk tendencies inherent on previous full-length Transatlantic
K.K., Delorean utilize piano-driven house hooks and palm-muted guitar to paint a
picture of such zealous exuberance. "Seasun", the record's heart and soul,
balances its ravey house character with a crescendo somewhere in between a
tribal chant and Des'ree's "You Gotta Be" played at double-speed, underwater.
These days, we should appreciate such escapist bravado.
