A lighter alternative to the sort of
intense environmental studies committed
to DAT by the likes of Chris Watson, BJ
Nilsen and most recently, Jana Winteren,
this album combines the complex timbral
realm of the great outdoors with more
interactive, human sounds. Dissolving
Records (famed for 2007's Dissolving
Orchestra album) label boss Thomas is
the sound recordist behind all this,
intrepidly moving his recording
equipment and musical instruments to the
same location over a series of summer
afternoons and evenings by bicycle.
Thomas pre-prepared loops, tailored to
the circumstances of each field
recording session and played them back,
allowing the man-made music to jostle
with the natural surroundings, creating
a kind of interactive concrΦte sound
mix. There's a real sense of wide-eyed
wonderment conveyed in these
compositions, and indeed the liner notes
go some way toward confirming that,
reveling in the every chirrup of every
bird and the billowing of breezes
through trees. In The Field is an ideal
entry point to the world of field
recording - not least because it's the
artist in question's own first foray
into the genre - it's all framed within
a very humanising context and unlike the
works of the aforementioned Watson, you
won't find yourself having to confront
the more visceral, often terrorisingly
intimate sonorities of the natural
world.
