 Release.Info :
Arriving November 24 is Somethin' Grand (Rounder), a very special DVD - half
intimate concert, half fascinating bio documentary - from enigmatic jazz/pop
chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux. The live performance portion of the 142 minute
program contains 17 from Peyroux' eclectic songbook of choice covers and
originals recorded this past January in Los Angeles in support of her most
recent spring '09 studio work Bare Bones.
Also on hand is a 50-minute BBC documentary that takes a look behind the
curtain, so to speak, of an artist who at times has appeared as both puzzlingly
quixotic and decidedly her own, artistically driven self. Whatever the
motivation -- or publicity fodder -- what we have is a supremely talented
singer, interpreter of classic songs and, with Bare Bones, an artist just
beginning to step into her own songs with conviction and authority. As a bonus
we get Peyroux performing five tracks in a stripped acoustic setting.
"Historically interpreting a song is a very great art," she observes. "It's
interesting that songwriting û as a credential for validity û seems to have
become an issue in recent years. It's the writing that often, ironically, gets
ignored and even suffers in popular music because people are distracted by the
lure of a great voice or a beat." Recommended. Check out two video from the live
DVD after the jump...
