Drums, bandleader. Italian drummer Gil Cuppini established himself
during the '40s. He played and recorded with a swing group in 1947, then
joined Hazy Osterwald's band in 1949. During the first Paris Jazz Fair
he accompanied Armando Trovajoli and Kramer Gorni. During the '50s, he
twice performed and recorded with Nunzio Rotondo; Cuppini also joined a
sextet co-led by Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini and also played with
and provided compositions and arrangements for small groups and
orchestras that he led. He visited America in 1958 with The
International Youth Band, then later perfomed with Teddy Wilson and
Arvell Shaw in Brussels. Cuppini broadcast a series of concerts on RAI
in the early '60s, then made several albums with Joe Venuti in the early
'70s. After that, Cuppini worked in a rhythm section with Franco
D'Andrea and Giorgio Azzolini that backed several American and European
musicians. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
