│ Dubtribe Sound System are one of the most enduring house ││
│ acts on the planet. Whether they're making deep, emotive ││
│ house 12-inches for DJs, or spaced out acoustic house in ││
│ their famous live sets, Dubtribe's Sunshine and Moonbeam ││
│ Jones know exactly what's needed to connect with their ││
│ audience, and move a dancefloor. ││
│ ││
│ Dubtribe Sound System's roots lay in the late 80s San ││
│ Francisco party scene, where the pair were both immersed in ││
│ the strong outdoor full moon party scene. Sunshine was ││
│ playing in bands at the time, and Moonbeam was working in an ││
│ office, but a chance meeting through a friend saw them ││
│ immediately bond over a love of music. They've been joined ││
│ at the hip ever since. ││
│ ││
│ In 1989 Sunshine returned from a summer trip to Ibiza and, ││
│ inspired by the emerging acid house scene on the island, ││
│ came back and wrote 12 house tunes on a cheap drum machine. ││
│ Unable to secure any gigs with their newly-formed sound, the ││
│ pair threw their own party in their house. On the last ││
│ Friday of the month, drummers, party-people and musicians ││
│ would descend to party all weekend. 'Someone said the music ││
│ was dub-tribey, and that's how the name came about,' ││
│ remembers Sunshine. 'We had 28 drummers and you couldn't ││
│ even hear the music. We had turntables but nobody could mix, ││
│ so it was mostly live, which is how we learned to do what we ││
│ do.' ││

│ Before long, word spread of the Dubtribe live vibe and the ││
│ pair threw in their jobs, bought a bus and began what would ││
│ be a few years of intensive touring. With audiences growing ││
│ and fans forming, Dubtribe obeyed the call to capture their ││
│ sound on vinyl. In 1993 Dubtribe Sound System, the ││
│ producers, arrived. 'Making records made everything weird,' ││
│ says Sunshine. 'It was difficult being in the studio,' adds ││
│ Moonbeam. 'We had got really accustomed to spontaneity. So ││
│ when we had to harness it, it was really hard.' ││
│ ││
│ But they needn't have worried. Early releases on West Coast ││
│ house label Organico included the sublime Mother Earth and ││
│ Sunshine's Theme - deeply soulful, tripped-out house music ││
│ that still sounds as relevant today as it did ten years ago. ││
│ During the mid-90s Dubtribe set up their own label, Imperial ││
│ Dub, which spawned club hits such as nostalgic acid house ││
│ tune We Used To Dance, the percussive El Regalo De Amor and ││
│ the huge, all-conquering Afro-Latin-sounding Equitoreal, ││
│ which featured a chant Sunshine learnt in Central America, ││
│ and team of Californian drummers. ││
│ ││
│ The album Bryant Street was an international acclaimed ││
│ hidden classic among house fans, though it never achieved ││
│ its full potential due to an ill-fated deal with US label ││
│ Jive. It did however spawn the vocal club favourites Breeze ││
│ and Holler, which continued to woo house fans with their ││
│ combination of heavy messages and deep beats. Dubtribe ││
│ continued to release singles on classic deep house label ││
│ Guidance alongside their own Imperial Dub. And as well as ││
│ their own tracks they released successful singles from acts ││
│ such as Hesohi, Neon Heights, Onionz and Brighton's BRS, and ││
│ had their sought-after compilations mixed by fans such as ││
│ Doc Martin and Jeno. ││
│ ││
│ Although Dubtribe had long established themselves as a live ││
│ act in the US, it was the success of their single Do It Now ││
│ that brought them global acclaim. What started out as a very ││
│ personal one-sided independent 12-inch blossomed into a ││
│ global club hit. Complete with a hypnotic club mix from Tom ││
│ Middleton, on the UK's Defected label, it drifted across ││
│ dancefloors from Ibiza to London to San Francisco in the ││
│ summer of 2000. If you didn't know Dubtribe before, you did ││
│ after Do It Now. ││
│ ││
│ Quiet for the past three years - put that down to the birth ││
│ of their first son - Baggage marks a spectacular return to ││
│ the forefront of deep house. As well as writing and ││
│ producing, Sunshine plays all the instruments on Baggage ││
│ himself, and says he didn't once touch a sampler. ││
│ ││
│ A listen to Baggage reveals all the Dubtribe trademarks - ││
│ deep beats, lush sounds, tribal rhythms, organic grooves and ││
│ songwriting filled with loads of heart. Both Sunshine and ││
│ moonbeam admit that the songs on Baggage are all highly ││
│ personal. 'There's a lot of reflection in Baggage,' admits ││
│ Sunshine. 'Everyone always want to be know the big Dubtribe ││
│ message but I don't think Baggage is any mystery.' 'The ││
│ title,' adds Moonbeam, is more than appropriate.' ││
│ ││
│ The album's opening gambit 'Shakertrance' will please fans ││
│ and is definitely one for the heads - a piece of hypnotic ││
│ house music that sets us up for 70 minutes of San Fran soul. ││
│ First single Autosoul teams Moonbeam's heartfelt vocals with ││
│ deep, sensual house and will surely soundtrack a sunshine ││
│ moment or two this summer. Raggatronique's spacious, dubbed ││
│ -out house sound is bound to work it's way to the front of ││
│ many a DJs record box this summer, as will Afro-splashed, ││
│ drum-heavy Nothing Is Impossible - which takes off where ││
│ Equitoreal left off. Elsewhere we get splashes of vocal ││
│ brilliance, some laidback, more chilled numbers and to ││
│ close, Dubtribe's epic Do It Now in all its original, piano ││
│ -led 12-minute glory. ││
│ ││
│ Both Sunshine and Moonbeam admit to having a combination of ││
│ excitement and nerves about the album's release, and their ││
│ first live gigs in over two years (which take in dates at ││
│ this year's Big Chill and Creamfields festivals and Sunday ││
│ Best in Ibiza with BBC Radio 1). They needn't worry. And nor ││
│ should you. Welcome back Dubtribe. ││
