There are no Salvation Army hymns to be found in the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble's
repertoire. They take elements of Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop and mix them together
into a vibrant soup of brass stylings. Unlike contemporaries such as the Hot 8
Brass Band there's no falling back onto tongue in cheek covers of well known
songs - this is original and diverse stuff.
This release is undoubtedly one of the most vital, invigorating and listenable
releases this year (potentially many years). An unsurprising accomplishment
considering Hypnotic make a conscious effort for an ôorganic styleö as described
by trombonist Saiph ôCidö Graves to The New York Times; a self-avowed reaction
to the increasingly technologically reliant music of today. Graves said the
ensemble aims to craft a form of ômusical medicineö that can ôtouch those people
who donÆt want to be touched.ö In this respect the album is a homerun.
