IndiaBeat , has released its latest album, 'Made in Chennai' featuring master
percussionists Pete Lockett and Uma Shankar. The album is being distributed by
Virgin Records (India). Made in Chennai is a unique collaboration featuring Pete
Lockett (Bjork, Jeff Beck, Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, AR Rahman) and Uma
Shankar, son of the great Ghatam legend TH Vikku Vinnayakram. The album puts a
new perspective on the ancient traditional forms found in Carnatic classical
rhythm. It brings it into a new cutting edge contemporary environment integrated
with sound design, electronics, world percussion and South Indian vocal.
Advanced complexities of Carnatic rhythmic structures are explored in depth in a
fresh, mature and musical manner which suits the connoisseur and the novice
alike. The album is an entertaining and enjoyable listen for all music lovers,
traditional or otherwise.
A massive array of percussion is covered, from South Indian to Japanese,
African, Western, Arabic, North Indian, Latin and much more. Haunting vocals
from vocalists Vinayaka and Mahesh and sound design and electronics by Pete add
an extra dimension to the recording. The album keeps the fine balance of
presenting the music in a new light whilst also reflecting the integrity of an
ancient musical heritage.
