█ "The American President: (Marc Shaiman) It's █
█ strange how this score disappeared from many of █
█ the soundtrack discussions for a few years after █
█ its initial release... And yet, in 1998, when its █
█ main theme was used in the theatrical and █
█ television trailers for Saving Private Ryan, its █
█ popularity began to soar. In fact, it was █
█ Shaiman's work in the trailers that sparked the █
█ entire debate about the effectiveness of Williams' █
█ strategy for Saving Private Ryan, and there are █
█ those who believe that the theme from The American █
█ President was better suited for Saving Private █
█ Ryan than Williams' thematically void score. On █
█ its own, the main theme is the blessing of The █
█ American President. It can be heard three times in █
█ full on the short album: in tracks 1, 15, and 16 █
█ (the version used in the Saving Private Ryan █
█ trailers was, I believe, a mix of these, or █
█ perhaps just 15 and 16). Outside of the theme, █
█ which has variations in the both the patriotic and █
█ heart-warming styles, the score is mostly a soft, █
█ romantic charmer. With many piano solos and █
█ sub-themes, it is a very relaxing listening █
█ experience, and a perfect score for the █
█ romantic-comedy (slash drama) genre. Track 7 █
█ provides a change of pace, as the entire country █
█ gets involved in the hoopla about the President's █
█ love-life and Shaiman whips up some faster █
█ intrigue.Overall, it is a very effective score. █
█ And, upon hearing it in the Saving Private Ryan █
█ trailers, I'd recommend that many people buy it █
█ (it's on discount at many places). Some have █
█ compared it (and quite appropriately) to James █
█ Newton Howard's Dave, which is another █
█ presidential comedy film of about the same time. █
█ Some of the same kinds of thematic and █
█ instrumental elements would eventually resurface █
█ in 2000's The Contender score. The brevity of The █
█ American President as an album is compensated by █
█ the enjoyable main themes and the genuine, █
█ romantic underscore in between. If you enjoy a █
█ pleasant, ""feel-good"" score for a sunny █
█ afternoon, this one is your choice. " █
