█ A regular criticism of Randy Edelman is that his █
█ scores often sound like trailer music, and never █
█ was this more apparent than with this score. His █
█ works over the last couple of years, such as █
█ Dragonheart and Gettysburg, seemed to show that he █
█ was finally developing into a composer of some █
█ note, but he has slipped a little here. It is as █
█ though Edelman decided to develop a good main █
█ theme, and mercilessly flog it to death over the █
█ course of 45 minutes. The aforementioned main █
█ theme is actually pretty good, and draws heavily █
█ on the work of Bernard Herrmann and suchlike, and █
█ is a classic 'thriller' score with lots of dark, █
█ moody, screeching violins, mournful pianos and █
█ stop-start notes - but enough already!. Every cue █
█ is virtually identical and is made up solely of █
█ slightly differing variations on the Main Theme, █
█ aside from some frantic 'chase' sequences during █
█ 'Desperation', 'Missing Persons' and 'Two Females █
█ and a Guy', an admittedly rather good percussion █
█ piece at the end of 'A Stimulating Bath' and some █
█ tense percussion rhythms during the beginning of █
█ 'Searching Through Drawers' and at the end of 'Two █
█ Females and a Guy'. The song at the end, 'In The █
█ Arms of Love', is performed by someone called █
█ Sherry Williams and is a rather flat and █
█ uninteresting blues number. In fact, the best █
█ thing about the album, other than the first █
█ rendition of the Main Theme (by the twenty-third █
█ it gets rather boring) is the absolute howler in █
█ the liner notes: I'm sure Sharon Stone's very █
█ convincing mole moves further up her left cheek █
█ the longer the film goes on (look for yourself!). █
