Release Notes:
The Candle Thieves are a fairly new two-piece indie-pop band from
Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Both band members (Scott McEwan and his
old sixth-form school friend simply known as æGlockÆ) were in other
world touring bands prior to forming The Candle Thieves, but say they
wanted to make more thought provoking music, and to express themselves
in a different way and so they created æThe Candle ThievesÆ.
The bands name comes from GlockÆs taking of candles from weddings the
two performed at. They use a wide variety of instruments to create a
unique sound which intertwines with the vocals and lyrical content
greatly, some of the instruments being, acoustic guitar, and piano, a
Glockenspiel, Harmonica and Shakers.
Their first full length album Sunshine and other Misfortunes will be
released on the 5th of April. The Candle Thieves had a unique way of
promoting themselves in the early days of their band; they performed at
peoples houses, with their Garden gigs and their Living Room gig tour.
They have a handful of these Living Room gigs in March and April. The
fee for these gigs includes a æWere All Gonna DiaryÆ which is a special
personalised diary of the night including written messages, pictures,
stickers and more! Which is a nice personalised touch, to what IÆm sure
would be a great gig.
In their songs they sing and touch upon issues that few people sing
about, all of their songs are heartfelt, with beautiful lyrics though
some of their songs have sinister undertones like in æThe Sunshine
SongÆ.
The Sunshine Song is a nice little song with an uplifting rhythm. ItÆs
mainly love themed, ôI would buy you a rainbowö, whilst also talking
about the negative side of love. The cleverly made video for this song
invites you into a magical world of flowers and sunshine, which is a
theme of the band, as they are known for handing out chocolates and
having blow-up sharks and teddy bears on stage when they perform,
generally creating a happy vibe at their gigs.
æSharks and BearsÆ is an interesting song about dreams and some of
lifeÆs ponderings ôSometimes the easiest things are hard to findö. ItÆs
a deep thinking song, questioning some of lifeÆs issues. æLonely,
Lonely, LonelyÆ is a very beautiful song, heartfelt and with poet-like
lyrics.
æBright LightsÆ is a nice song, with a pleasant catchy guitar riff
throughout, and with a beautiful piano solo in the middle.
At their gigs, they talk to their audience and engage with them.
McEwen seems to be a very humourous guy, and it appears that they want
the audience to enjoy the music as much as the band enjoys performing
it. They say their shows are æexecuted with a firm slice of happyÆ! The
Candle Thieves are great songwriters and musicians and a definite band
to look out for!
