ªª▓ This St. Petersburg duo of Igor Potsukailo and Sergey Matveev (who also releases solo works ▓ªª
ªª▓ under the name Intershum) have certainly had a prolific output since their inception in ▓ªª
ªª▓ 1998, having racked up an impressive 22 solo releases and 13 compilation appearances to date ▓ªª
ªª▓ for labels as diverse as Steinklang Industries, Blade Records, Athanor, Drone Records, ▓ªª
ªª▓ Ultra, and many more. 'Bad Heaven' follows the general trend for their full length works, ▓ªª
ªª▓ being released on a limited CDR (222 hand-numbered copies), but this time it is esoterically ▓ªª
ªª▓ packaged in a card folder (featuring an image of an Icon found in Old Ural village, ▓ªª
ªª▓ reflecting the general theme of the Russian Orthodox Church) that contains the disc itself, ▓ªª
ªª▓ as well as three black and white inserts featuring images of traditional Russian domed ▓ªª
ªª▓ towers reaching into the sky. An unusual touch is that these inserts all have 'hand-burnt' ▓ªª
ªª▓ edges which add to the mysterious aura of this release, and demonstrate an obvious care and ▓ªª
ªª▓ commitment given to the presentation of their own works. The band also espouse a lasting ▓ªª
ªª▓ interest in surrealism, as shown by their participation in several multimedia sound ▓ªª
ªª▓ installations such as 'Emplacement' and 'Contact With The Microworld' (alongside fellow ▓ªª
ªª▓ multimedia artists 2012), and their live shows often incorporate video, improvisation, and ▓ªª
ªª▓ 'psychoacoustic apparatus' to create a wide frequency montage of trance-like ambient and ▓ªª
ªª▓ harsh noise elements aimed at total integration of the audience into their performances. ▓ªª
ªª▓ They also quote A. Breton's definition of surrealism as an inspiration and artistic goal - ▓ªª
ªª▓ 'Pure psychic automatism willing to express the real functioning of the reflection either ▓ªª
ªª▓ orally or written, or in any other form. Dictation of mind without any control from the ▓ªª
ªª▓ intellect, outside of any aesthetic of moral considerations' - high ideals indeed, and an ▓ªª
ªª▓ intriguing maxim to see if they can live up to over the four untitled near quarter-hour ▓ªª
ªª▓ pieces that comprise 'Bad Heaven'... ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ The first track begins with a looping mechanical sounding drone constructed from reversed ▓ªª
ªª▓ Russian Orthodox chant, layered alongside more religious chanting played in the correct ▓ªª
ªª▓ direction. Heavily echoed and reverberated strata of both of these elements build and ▓ªª
ªª▓ interplay to create a sacral atmospheric drone that pulsates and throbs through convoluted ▓ªª
ªª▓ combinations, so creating an air of meditative anticipation similar to the sound of a ▓ªª
ªª▓ suspended musical chord. A paradoxical sense of both restful yet apprehensive tension grows ▓ªª
ªª▓ as the track thickens, with more discernible human vocalisations rising above the growing ▓ªª
ªª▓ foundation drone, thus keeping the internal balance of the piece (between chant and the ▓ªª
ªª▓ effected constant background hum) on an even forward momentum throughout. Finishing on a ▓ªª
ªª▓ muted slowly paced striking of a low pitch-shifted bell, the formant elements fall away as ▓ªª
ªª▓ the track fades into the distance, with the involving ritual impact having made the overall ▓ªª
ªª▓ apparent length seem much shorter than it's actual 15 minutes - a good indication of it's ▓ªª
ªª▓ entrancing ambient impact. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Continuing onwards, the second untitled movement shifts the base drone into modulated and ▓ªª
ªª▓ resonant deep bass feedback territory, with chittering insectoid synth effects and hollow ▓ªª
ªª▓ glass-like scrapings soaring overhead. The sense of anxiety carries on with occasional ▓ªª
ªª▓ filtered sweeps of keyboard pads and more reversed effected samples, but this time of a ▓ªª
ªª▓ slightly more industrial tinge. The multiple strands move to and from foreground to ▓ªª
ªª▓ background via more clever use of reverb, and with the subtle introduction of more noise ▓ªª
ªª▓ based sounds a confused impact slowly builds, possibly a reflection of the traditional ▓ªª
ªª▓ Russian Church's place in modern society, an anachronism searching for it's place in a ▓ªª
ªª▓ shifting, rapidly changing world. The brief re-appearance and surfacing of the vocal chants ▓ªª
ªª▓ at the mid-way point onwards also seem to support this, in that as soon as the sacred finds ▓ªª
ªª▓ it's place in modern society, it is not long before it is swamped and buried once more by ▓ªª
ªª▓ new contemporary societal twists and turns. The delayed effects work especially well in ▓ªª
ªª▓ filling the ambient spaces between the uttered vocal lines, and they add a psychedelic twist ▓ªª
ªª▓ as of the boundaries of consciousness being traversed in new and unexpected ways, an ▓ªª
ªª▓ impression increased by looping subtle subliminal whispers that lead to a conclusion of ▓ªª
ªª▓ sustained vibrating time-stretched and lowered voices. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ A rapidly panning vocal loop adds a brief rhythmical quality to the introduction of track ▓ªª
ªª▓ three, which is soon joined by the chanting once more and the addition of both distorted and ▓ªª
ªª▓ bubbling vocoded synth elements. Barely discernable drum loops also briefly raise their ▓ªª
ªª▓ heads into the mix, and regular synthetic clicks add to the wah-wah filtering of the ▓ªª
ªª▓ underlying parts in a confused intoxicated manner. As the most aggresively surrealistic ▓ªª
ªª▓ piece so far, impressions of swimming through a maelstrom of unwanted distractions dominates ▓ªª
ªª▓ it's feel, making it an uneasy cocktail of juxtaposed parts and the most uncomfortable ▓ªª
ªª▓ listening of 'Bad Heaven's sections yet encountered. Oppresive and almost antagonistic, it ▓ªª
ªª▓ demands a response from the listener (even if only to move the album onto the final track) ▓ªª
ªª▓ but is probably the weakest of the first three excursions due to relatively little ▓ªª
ªª▓ development and variation between the constituent sections (a shame following the much ▓ªª
ªª▓ stronger and more successful pieces). Again it is finished with a fading out of the more ▓ªª
ªª▓ energetic samples, to leave the softer ambient drones to disappear into the void left ▓ªª
ªª▓ behind. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Deep bell strikes, looping whispers and the everpresent monkish vocals then carry the ▓ªª
ªª▓ listener into the final section of 'Bad Heaven', and slowly ascending and panning pads of ▓ªª
ªª▓ static add interest to the already familiar combination. The tolling bell is sombre and ▓ªª
ªª▓ maudlin, bringing a funereal element into play as once again the sacred is struggling to be ▓ªª
ªª▓ heard over the babble of the secular masses, and evokes images of the interment and burial ▓ªª
ªª▓ of Russia's religious past. Occasional sections of chanting briefly lift the mood with more ▓ªª
ªª▓ hopeful major scale influenced progressions, but are soon swallowed by the darker droning ▓ªª
ªª▓ chatter and then forgotten. Although more successful than the previous piece, the lack of ▓ªª
ªª▓ variation starts to wear slightly, with two few building blocks spread across too long a ▓ªª
ªª▓ length (with everything having been heard before on 'Bad Heaven' already, this near ▓ªª
ªª▓ re-hashing of the second track seems a little lazy). A slight rhythmic variation towards ▓ªª
ªª▓ it's final minutes points to a direction that could have been taken to avoid this feeling of ▓ªª
ªª▓ monotony and disappointing sense of being sold short, and unfortunately thus leaves a sense ▓ªª
ªª▓ of the composition having been rushed and opportunities having been missed. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Overall then, 'Bad Heaven' turns out to be rather a mixed bag, that quite possibly could ▓ªª
ªª▓ have benefitted with more thought having been put into it's second half. This is not to ▓ªª
ªª▓ demean the first two tracks however, as these succeed in a wholly successful manner, and ▓ªª
ªª▓ probably would have worked admirably if packaged on their own without the weaker second half ▓ªª
ªª▓ of this release. These final two tracks just don't show the level of thought and innovation ▓ªª
ªª▓ as displayed in the packaging and preceding pieces, and all of the 'good work' previously ▓ªª
ªª▓ established is soon wiped from memory by a sense of being sold short. This seems to be a ▓ªª
ªª▓ common error made by more recent dark ambient acts it seems (Zoat-Aon, take a bow as another ▓ªª
ªª▓ prime example) in stretching too little too far, and I for one would much prefer shorter ▓ªª
ªª▓ releases that maintain the listener's interest rather than yet another attempt at padding ▓ªª
ªª▓ out an album to full length with substandard less inspired 'filler'. As for a final verdict, ▓ªª
ªª▓ predictably I could happily recommend this until the halfway point, as it is carefully ▓ªª
ªª▓ constructed, atmospheric, and evocative of the intended source material - just don't let the ▓ªª
ªª▓ second half destroy all of that preceding good work. Simultaneously successful and bloody ▓ªª
ªª▓ frustrating - on the strength of 'Bad Heaven', less output and more stringent ▓ªª
ªª▓ self-discernment could lift Bardoseneticcube out of the masses and into the next league. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
