Release Notes:
Recording the follow-up to your breakthrough, award-winning album in
six hours is either an act of absurd hubris or profound insecurity.
Either the Eddy Current Suppression Ring believe laborious production
sessions are reserved for less talented bands or that their band is
somehow undeserving of the additional studio time their accolades have
afforded them. Lead single "Anxiety" more suggests the latter, that
confidence may be in short supply. Recognition seems to have had the
opposite of its intended effect on the Saints and Stooges-venerating
ECSR. The song is no shrinking violet, but there's an audible
trepidation in its ramshackle tumult. The way frontman Brendan
Suppression shrieks the title suggests that the black gloves he wears
to calm his stage fright are of limited utility. Yet it's precisely his
nervous self-awareness that propels "Anxiety", in spite of its
well-worn influences. Suppression might be loath to admit that he's "a
little scared [he] might fail," but the truth is that fear might be the
secret to ECSR's success.
