ªª▓ Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern ▓ªª
ªª▓ instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yogaÆs ôrock star.ö With a remarkably soulful ▓ªª
ªª▓ voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das û known ▓ªª
ªª▓ to friends, family, and fans as simply KD û has taken the call-and-response chanting out of ▓ªª
ªª▓ yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling chant ▓ªª
ªª▓ artist of all time, with over 300,000 records sold. His first studio recording in a decade, ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôHEART AS WIDE AS THE WORLDö invests KDÆs magnetic chanting with an electrifying rock ænÆ ▓ªª
ªª▓ roll sensibility informed by a lifetime of experience and musical love. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Born Jeffrey Kagel, Krishna Das grew up in suburban New Hyde Park, Long Island, where music ▓ªª
ªª▓ was part of his life from the get-go, taking some piano lessons before playing cornet and ▓ªª
ªª▓ baritone euphonium in his high school marching band. At the tender age of nine, a friendÆs ▓ªª
ªª▓ older brother introduced him to the joyous magic of rock ænÆ roll. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ By the time he hit his mid-teens, KD was leading a sort of double life. By day, he was your ▓ªª
ªª▓ typical high school basketball-playing suburban kid. But he was also a stone blues freak, ▓ªª
ªª▓ grooving on such greats as Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, and Bukka White and spending ▓ªª
ªª▓ his nights in the ôparallel universeö that was the Greenwich Village folk scene. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ While he dreamed of becoming a rock ænÆ roll singer, KD couldnÆt imagine that as a viable ▓ªª
ªª▓ career path for ôa white Jewish kid from Long Island.ö But in his second year at Stony Brook ▓ªª
ªª▓ University, he hooked up with a fledging band of freshmen calling themselves the Soft White ▓ªª
ªª▓ Underbellyàthough theyÆd later achieve heavy metal dominance as the one and only Blue ▓ªª
ªª▓ O"yster Cult. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôIt was okay,ö KD recalls, ôbut they were young kids just starting to smoke dope and I was ▓ªª
ªª▓ on the way out of that, at least at that period. So we werenÆt really jiving and I quit.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ KD headed north to the State University at New Paltz, with a goal of pursuing his growing ▓ªª
ªª▓ interest in Eastern Philosophy. He was soon disillusioned by academia and dropped out. It ▓ªª
ªª▓ was at this driftless stage that he met Ram Dass, the spiritual writer/teacher who would ▓ªª
ªª▓ forever alter his path. In the spring of 1969, Ram Dass invited KD to join him in New ▓ªª
ªª▓ Hampshire. Before heading north, he made one more trip down to Long Island, to attend a Jimi ▓ªª
ªª▓ Hendrix gig at his alma mater of Stony Brook, where he hooked up with a number of his old ▓ªª
ªª▓ friends, including Sandy Pearlman, now the producer/manager for the Soft White Underbelly. ▓ªª
ªª▓ He invited KD to rejoin the group on their album and upcoming tour and just like that, KD ▓ªª
ªª▓ found himself standing smack in the middle of the crossroads, facing the most significant ▓ªª
ªª▓ choice of his life. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ But to KD, the choice was clear and he chose to spend the next year traveling across the ▓ªª
ªª▓ country as a student of Ram Dass, and in August 1970, he finally made the journey to India ▓ªª
ªª▓ that he had been dreaming of since first seeing Satyajit RayÆs classic film ôPather ▓ªª
ªª▓ Panchali.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ KDÆs first pilgrimage led him to Ram DassÆ own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to most ▓ªª
ªª▓ as Maharaj-ji. Elusive, often elliptical, Maharaj-ji espoused a potent message of ▓ªª
ªª▓ unconditional love. ôMy guru was completely unusual,ö KD says. ôHe didnÆt teach, he didnÆt ▓ªª
ªª▓ lecture, he didnÆt write books. He hung around, so thatÆs what you did.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Adopting the name Krishna Das, KD began to chant as part of following the path of Bhakti ▓ªª
ªª▓ yoga û the yoga of devotion. ôWe began to learn how to override the things that close us ▓ªª
ªª▓ down,ö KD says. ôChanting was a way of entering into that flow. The theory, of course, is ▓ªª
ªª▓ that you develop the strength to continue to override the ability of that stuff to grab you ▓ªª
ªª▓ and bring you down to a more conditioned state.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ After two and a half years, Maharaj-ji informed KD that the time had come him to return home ▓ªª
ªª▓ in order to face the emotional attachments he had left behind. ôI never intended to come ▓ªª
ªª▓ back to America,ö KD says. ôNever. It was really a shock that he sent me back.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ KD did as he was bidden, planning to return to India as soon as possible. Alas, six months ▓ªª
ªª▓ after his return, word came that Maharaj-ji had died. ôThat was a big thing,ö KD says. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôPeople sometimes never recover from the death of a loved one, but this was not the death of ▓ªª
ªª▓ a loved one û this was the death of love for me.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Grief-stricken, KD drifted across America, winding up in Northern California. In 1974, he ▓ªª
ªª▓ joined with singer/songwriter (and fellow Maharaj-ji devotee) Jai Uttal, jazz violinist ▓ªª
ªª▓ Charlie Burnham (later to play with such artists as Cassandra Wilson, James Blood Ulmer, and ▓ªª
ªª▓ Henry Threadgill, among many others), and kirtan singer Diana Rogers in a family kirtan band ▓ªª
ªª▓ dubbed Amazing Grace. The group performed both original chants and traditional Indian songs, ▓ªª
ªª▓ recorded for posterity on one side of Ram Dassæ influential ôLOVE SERVE REMEMBERö box set. ▓ªª
ªª▓ But before long, KD found himself grappling with many of the same issues he had struggled ▓ªª
ªª▓ with before his time with Maharaj-ji. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôWhen Maharaj-ji died,ö he recalls, ôI quickly fell apart. My shadow side really surfaced ▓ªª
ªª▓ and I got into a lot of self-destructive things. But if it wasnÆt for the time with him, I ▓ªª
ªª▓ would have never survived what I had to go through in this life.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ He took solace in music, finding peace and strength in both his Bhakti yoga practice as well ▓ªª
ªª▓ as in such heroes as Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, and Bruce Springsteen (whom he ▓ªª
ªª▓ laughingly calls ôthe Bodhisattva of New Jerseyö). KD also co-founded Triloka Records, a ▓ªª
ªª▓ California-based label specializing in world music, releasing such artists as Jai Uttal, ▓ªª
ªª▓ sarod virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan, and legendary jazz musician/composer Jackie McLean. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ In 1994, KD realized that he needed to venture out of his Upper East Side apartment to share ▓ªª
ªª▓ his practice with the world. He packed up his harmonium and traveled downtown to Jivamukti ▓ªª
ªª▓ Yoga Center, where began chanting for an ever-growing audience of yoga students. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôIt took me 20 years to really, truly recognize that if I wanted to find that happiness ▓ªª
ªª▓ again, I had to find it in me,ö KD says. ôChanting was the only way I could do that. I just ▓ªª
ªª▓ knew that if I did not start chanting û with people û IÆd never be able to get rid of the ▓ªª
ªª▓ dark places in my own heart.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ He recorded and released ôONE TRACK HEARTö in 1995. Intended as a ôcalling card,ö the album ▓ªª
ªª▓ became hugely popular in the yoga community. KD found himself in high demand, with yoga ▓ªª
ªª▓ centers everywhere eager to have him sing. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ His American background had a profound effect on KDÆs chanting. While his chants are, were, ▓ªª
ªª▓ and will always be rooted in the spiritual sounds of India, his unique natural music soon ▓ªª
ªª▓ began to inform his melodies. ôWhen I started chanting,ö he says, ôthe melodies I chanted ▓ªª
ªª▓ were melodies I learned in India. But the more I chanted, the more the melodies were coming ▓ªª
ªª▓ to me. And because of my DNA, they were really very Western-shaped melodies.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ He released a string of well-received albums including öPILGRIM HEARTö, ôBREATH OF THE ▓ªª
ªª▓ HEARTö and ôDOOR OF FAITH,ö the former heavily featuring the vocals of KD fan Sting, and the ▓ªª
ªª▓ latter two both produced by Rick Rubin and utilizing, at the producerÆs request, a palette ▓ªª
ªª▓ of traditional Indian instrumentation. Soon after KD began to conceive öHEART AS WIDE OF THE ▓ªª
ªª▓ WORLDö after a chat with his friend û and co-producer of 2005Æs ôALL ONEö û Steely DanÆs ▓ªª
ªª▓ Walter Becker. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôWalter came to hear me sing out in Maui,ö KD says. ôHe came up afterwards and said, æWeÆve ▓ªª
ªª▓ got to do a garage band record.Æ I realized, thatÆs right! ThatÆs what IÆm hearing in my ▓ªª
ªª▓ head, when IÆm playing those four chords on the harmonium, IÆm hearing a garage band around ▓ªª
ªª▓ me! That was the first conscious awareness I had that I wanted to do a record that ▓ªª
ªª▓ wasàrockier.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ KDÆs longtime collaborator David Nichtern encouraged him to pursue this vision. In addition ▓ªª
ªª▓ to an array of traditional Indian players, ôHEART AS WIDE AS THE WORLDö sees backing from ▓ªª
ªª▓ guitarist/producer Nichtern û a multiple Emmy Award-winning composer and songwriter ▓ªª
ªª▓ (including the pop classic ôMidnight at the Oasisö) û and such session superstars as bassist ▓ªª
ªª▓ Mark Egan (Pat Metheny Group, Sting, Marianne Faithfull), drummer Jerry Marotta (Peter ▓ªª
ªª▓ Gabriel, Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney), and keyboardist Kevin Bents (Donald Fagen, Jewel, ▓ªª
ªª▓ Boz Scaggs). The call-and-response harmonies come courtesy of KDÆs daughter, Janaki Kagel, ▓ªª
ªª▓ and the Kosmic Kirtan Posse of New York. As with traditional kirtan, the songs begin softly ▓ªª
ªª▓ and slowly, building to emotional crescendos that open like a flower. Throughout, the ▓ªª
ªª▓ listener is drawn in via KDÆs extraordinary voice, richly burnished and intensely hypnotic, ▓ªª
ªª▓ both worldly and otherworldly. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôHis voice is like gravity,ö Nichtern says. ôYou just fall into his voice. Many people, that ▓ªª
ªª▓ donÆt really know what the context is, pick up on that. People listen to KD records when ▓ªª
ªª▓ theyÆre having babies, or while theyÆre dying. It strikes a deep chord. ItÆs a fundamental.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Nichtern also pushed KD to draw on his gift for storytelling by penning some original ▓ªª
ªª▓ lyrical content. The words are intended to serve as portals to the chanting of the Divine ▓ªª
ªª▓ Names on traditional hymns such as ôSri Ram Jai Ramö and ôNarayana.ö ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ KD is clear that he is first and foremost a devotee, with the sharing of his practice a ▓ªª
ªª▓ profound act of his faith. Nevertheless, KD has become an iconic music presence, drawing in ▓ªª
ªª▓ other artists, including Sting, Madonna, Mike D, jazz bassist Stanley Jordan, and Def ▓ªª
ªª▓ Leppard drummer Rick Allen, some of whom are yoga devotees, while others are simply moved by ▓ªª
ªª▓ the power of the music. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ No less an expression of his faith and love than his previous works, the potency and ▓ªª
ªª▓ pleasures found in ôHEART AS WIDE AS THE WORLDö do not depend on any one belief system. ▓ªª
ªª▓ Electrifying and unbound, Krishna DasÆ devotional music is as powerful and moving as the ▓ªª
ªª▓ purest rock ænÆ roll. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ ôThe chanting just hits you and you want to be a part of it,ö KD promises. ôThatÆs the point ▓ªª
ªª▓ of this whole thing. ThatÆs what cuts through all the bullshit. You get lit up. You donÆt ▓ªª
ªª▓ have to know what it means.ö ▓ªª
