must be a hard life being mark bell. the weight of expectation almost
unbearable. either he shrugs it off or he worries about it day and
night. having had human contact with mark, i can probably assume the
former. far too busy to worry about what we think or expect. bollocks
to all that. having spent his time working for the likes of depeche
mode and bjork as well a dj career has meant that it's left little
time for lfo.
lfo. the three-lettered acronym that is synonymous with british
techno. revered, regarded, rewind. it's a name from the past; pre
dsp, pre glitch, pre i-d-fucking-m. means nothing to the kids. what
could this stalwart, this elder statesman of uk dance do that hasn't
been done before? well, there's the tunes. i mean proper ones; with
basslines and choruses and melodies and beats. as he says himself,
after working with vocalists...."i prefer the synths to sing on this
one."
mark has refused to still sit and be pegged into a style, genre or
movement and it's the variety on offer that impresses. from ambient,
shimmering plateaus ('blown') to jackhammer excess ('mum-man').
addictive pixel pop ('freak') to baroque-tronica ('nevertheless').
there are though some skip-button moments; the silly 'snot' sounds
dated and throwaway and 'moistly' does sound like a discarded hang-up
from the previous album.
it isn't a radical shift, it may not even sound contemporary. but
these eleven tracks prove that uk techno can still hold its own
