Release.Info :
Desario calling this its debut is a little misleading. The members have all
played together in other bands (Holiday Flyer, California Oranges, Rocketship),
which means they have a good deal of experience playing music in official bands,
especially with one another. Under the tag Desario (taken from Daniel Desario of
Freaks & Geeks), this is in fact their first album. All of their previous
experience serves them well as they conduct a mature pop album full of bright
spots.
Vocalist John ConleyÆs voice is reminiscent of so many other pop vocalists, but
a dead-on comparison is fleeting. And since IÆm not saying, ôJohn Conley sounds
like fill in the blank,ö his voiceÆs familiarity is actually a warming
sensation. ItÆs like listening to somebody tell stories about a war he was
actually in, not a lame historianÆs account. You trust Conley, because heÆs been
there. Conley is warmly paired with metallic sheets of guitar riffs that are
brightly laid over the songs to give them a sheen that reinforces the songÆs
melodies and positively affects the punchy mood. The drums happily sit in the
background to just perpetuate the beat; you get the sense the drums donÆt want
to step on the toes of ConleyÆs vocals and Michael YoasÆs guitars.
Desario basically have two gears: The up-beat songs with playful jabs about
them, and the toned down ôballads.ö The ballads donÆt grind things to a sappy
halt, but they do offer a nice mix that keeps the album fresh and resonating.
The clean sheets of guitar riffs scramble and give way to more picked notes,
while Conley deftly delivers his alternate style.
The band is acutely aware of its strengths, which captures the essence of
bright, shimmering pop music. The sound is clean, without a trace of the static
or fuzz that is in the current pop rotation. This eliminates any excess noise
that might stand in the way of Conley, who most certainly needs to be the focal
point. Conley has too many highlights to count, but his best work is perhaps on
ôDrama Club.ö The song is in DesarioÆs ballad style, which is brittle and
beautiful, featuring a lights-out Conley melody. The song is tight, focused, and
everything clicks perfectly. All of the sounds swirl about without breaking
loose, thanks to ConleyÆs melody holding everything together so well. There is a
little chink in the armor, however, on ôMouth Closed.ö ConleyÆs melody is
typically solid, but isnÆt spectacular enough to save the bland guitar. A really
good musical break is wasted amid the mediocrity, in which ethereal tones of
flurried notes blend together perfectly. At least in the albumÆs weakest track
you still get a sharp Conley and a fantastic musical break.
Desario has so many great moments on this albums, led by songs such as ôNautical
Waysö, ôFine Timeö, ôDrama Clubö, ôHoustonö, ôRain and Goldö, ôAs I Recallö, and
the closer öSequoia Geeö. If you didnÆt catch that, I just named 7 of the
albumÆs 10 tracks as great moments. ThatÆs a really good complement. Even ôCane
Colaö, and öLate Sedanö are solid songs that will surely be liked as well.
Straightforward pop music often passes through as forgettable and uninspired,
but Desario hits a formula that brims with goodness. ConleyÆs great voice and
fantastic melodies lead us through beautifully constructed pop songs that should
be greatly enjoyed long after its initial listen.
