"Haruomi Hosono, overshadowed by his Yellow Magic
Orchestra bandmate Ryuichi Sakamoto, has still forged a
unique path through ambient music, building on the
advances made by the soundscapes of Brian Eno during the
'70s, though he recorded his first album before Eno had
even joined Roxy Music. Born in Tokyo in 1947, Hosono
studied sociology at Rikkyo University, forming several
bands while still in school. His first solo album, April
Fool, was released in 1969.
Throughout the early and mid-'70s, he played the part of
studio musician and bassist, and formed two fusion
projects, Happy Band and Tin Pan Alley. Later in the
'70s, he began recording tape and synthesizer
experiments which culminated in the album Cochin Moon,
released on the Japanese King Records. By 1978, his
group Harry Hosono & the Yellow Magic Band had sprung
into Yellow Magic Orchestra, with Ryuichi Sakamoto and
Yukihiro Takahashi. Coming just a few years after
electro futurists Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, YMO
pursued a similar trail, later incorporating synth pop
and new wave as well and becoming Japan's most
successful band during the '80s - even though they had
broken up by 1984.
Even while Yellow Magic Orchestra was still around,
Hosono had been busy with other projects. With three
labels to his credit (YEN, Non-Standard, and Monad
Music) and releases on those labels under guises such as
S-F-X, Mercuric Dance, and --most prolifically-- F.O.E.
(Friends of the Earth), Haruomi Hosono stayed active
into the late '80s. He composed scores for the films
Paradise View and The Tales of Genji, but became
disgusted with the industry and withdrew from music
altogether by the turn of the decade. The pioneers of
ambient house began to namecheck Yellow Magic Orchestra
in the early '90s ù even producing a YMO remix album
called High Tech/No Crime featuring the Orb plus many
others ù and Hosono returned with 1992's Medicine
Compilation From the Quiet Lodge. Albums for Creation
and Polygram followed during the mid-'90s." - John Bush,

"Like his fellow Yellow Magic Orchestra alumnus Ryuichi
Sakamoto, keyboardist and programmer Haruomi Hosono has
a taste for exotic experimentation. But the similarities
pretty much end there. Sakamoto's solo work runs to a
sort of light contemporary classical music, and his
collaborations have tended to be with pop musicians. On
N.D.E., Hosono teams up with a host of sidemen both
famous (bassist Bill Laswell) and obscure (saxophonist
Yasuaki Shimizu, violinist Arun Bagal) to create a
beautiful, funky, and yet strangely creepy collage of
electronic beats, modal melodies, and exotic samples.
Not surprisingly, Laswell's is the strongest presence
here ù on "Navigations" he pretty much takes over with
his trademark punchy bass lines and samples of North
African ululations, while the textures and drones of
"Edge of the End" recall his own Hear No Evil album of a
few years earlier. Another strong voice here is that of
Bagal, whose keening modal violin make "Strange
Attractor" and "Aero" two of the most compelling items
on this album. Highly recommended" - Rick Anderson,

"Since the early '70s, Haruomi Hosono has been perhaps
the most innovative artist/producer in Japanese popular
and electronic music. Like many great music innovators
(Eno would be an example), he's had sucesses but big
hits and top selling albums come infrequently. The first
thing that got him noticed was his work as bassist for
Happy End in the early 70s. There he pushed for creating
original rock / r&b songs sung in Japanese (while you
had a lot of sentimental popular songs sung in Japanese
at the time, rock was sung in English in those days) By
the late 70s Hosono was making tropical exotica style
music sometimes solo or with his band Tin Pan Alley and
inspired partly by Van Dyke Parks. Again he creating a
trend by doing something different from al most everyone
else. In '78, aided by virtuoso keyboardist Ryuichi
Sakamoto and programmer Hideki Matsutake and eventually
drummer/vocalist Yukihiro Takahashi, he was the major
figure in founding the Technopop style of synth music in
Japan. That year also found the birth of the band YMO
(HH, Sakamoto and Takahashi), this spawned a half decade
or so of technopop music being the cutting edge pop
sound in Japan. As an undercurrent during the YMO era
and coming to the forefront after it was Hosono's
interest in ambient music. During the mid 80s, besides
song production for numerous other artists, Hosono
himself worked on 2 very different sides of his own
music. One side was the creation of ambient works. On
the other side he was into a synth funk sound with his
new act F.O.E. for a quite different side of things. By
the early 90s Hosono was involved in hybrids of
ambience, technopop and world music, by the mid 90s he
was incorporating drum and bass and lounge music into
the mix. In the late 90s he's revived some of his
earlier roots with new tropical and r&b sounds without
the electronica and has been actively remastering much
of his and YMO's back catalog. Most recently he's formed
a successful electronica act with Yukihiro Takahashi
called Sketch Show with Sakamoto joining in as a
frequent special guest just in time for the 20th
anniversary of YMO's breakup. "
"Stands for Near Death Experience. With G. Hotoda, B.
Laswell, Y. Terada credited on the cover. Shimizu also
contributes. Heavy dose of Bill Laswell on this one.
Solid catchy beats with lots of tabla and Arabic
instruments. Good and hyper. Well engineered. If you
care to damage the cd insert, you can peel off the top
sticker revealing the album credits hidden on the
backing paper. Hosono said he sent some tapes to Bill
Laswell in New York, and he added to and mixed them." -
