Having laid down the groundwork with
What Happened and the near-perfect Solar
Bridge, the crown princes of drone
deliver what might prove to be a
career-defining moment - the sort of
thing destined to be reverentially
whispered about amongst analogue
fanatics the world over for generations
to come... possibly. Even the most
delirious bluster you might direct at
this exceptional double slab of vinyl
might be deemed justifiable once you've
clapped ears on it: there's something
about this trio's handling of their art
which not only exudes a comprehensive
knowledge of their antecedents (Cluster,
Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh spring
immediately to mind), but suggests an
understanding of the truly essential
components of drone and synthesizer
music. The music on Allegory Of
Allergies is actually a shortened,
revisited version of music originally
released on a two-hour Gods Of Tundra
cassette. The magnitude of this album is
still truly immense though, reveling in
the beauty of electronic sound and
approaching its subject with that same
freshness and sense of wonderment found
on works from the BBC Radiophonic
stable, or perhaps even pieces by Morton
Subotnick and Pauline Oliveiros. 'Nereus
(Spirits Over The Lake)' is a great
introductory gambit, flooding the
speakers with a delicate and disciplined
confluence of tones, with minuscule
melodies swimming about therein.
Following this magisterial, side-
spanning first piece the B-side features
one or two shorter entries, giving you a
sense of tonal variety and the group's
wider repertoire. After a sublime first
disc you discover that not all the music
here is so easy going: from a slow
start, 'Underwater Mountain' reveals
itself as the album's most extreme
entry; a monolith of loud dissonance
that's mercilessly dense but
magnetically beautiful all the same. The
final entry, 'Arbol Del Tule' might rank
as the finest thing here though,
featuring gentle, dissolved guitar
figures looped and meshed into the blend
of electronic sonorities, helping build
a sense of melancholic resonance. By the
midway point, what sounds like a close-
up field recording of a crackling
woodfire emerges from the drone,
sounding huge and gloriously tactile in
the mix. Allegory Of Allergies is
destined to become one of this year's
most memorable albums in the ambient
genre, exhibiting sober, steady-handed
analogue craftsmanship the like of which
was last heard on 2008's Kevin Drumm
outing, Imperial Distortion.
