After writing and directing the wonderful
little romantic flick Before Sunrise, Richard
Linklater decided to make a screen adaptation
of Eric Bogosian's play subUrbia. We're glad
he did, cause this really is one one of his
most underrated and underappreciated titles.
Capturing the true spirit of the 90s, subUrbia
is a movie about nothing. More specifically
though, it's about a night in the lives of a
bunch of kids in Anywhere, America, loitering
around their godforsaken little town, drinking
and fantasizing about making it in the big city
- or not. It's about hopes and dreams, and the
futility of it all, and life and relationships
and everything important. At the same time, it's
just a bunch of kids getting drunk outside a
convenience store.
