Even The Sound Shine

The music was recorded about halfway through a three week
tour in Europe April/May 1994. We recorded two nights and
one afternoon at the same venue in Wuppertal. In putting
this project together I was interested in building on what
had been established with my trio, the familiarity we had
with my music and with each other's playing. By adding
horns to the group, I was looking to expand the sonic and
structural possibilities while still exploring the uses of
improvisation to develop written material. This was
especially true in the new pieces which are a series (or
string) of musical episodes woven together through
improvisation.

Pianist Myra Melford is one of the leaders of the
avant-garde of the 1990s. Her lengthy compositions are
episodic yet logical, building up logically to passionate
levels yet leaving room for quieter moments; she is a
master of dynamics. Her melodies are strong but her sideman
also have the option to improvise pretty freely within the
context of the music. On this CD Melford is fortunate to
have such versatile players as the powerful trumpeter Dave
Douglas; the very impressive Marty Ehrlich on alto,
clarinet, and bass clarinet; bassist Lindsey Horner; and
drummer Reggie Nicholson. Despite their presence, Myra
Melford is consistently the most interesting improviser and
her accompaniment behind the horn solos constantly drive
and push her musicians to play at their maximum creativity.
Overall this is a memorable set of innovative jazz well
deserving of several listens.
