These 1952 recordings are a rich and beautiful look at
the music of the Mandinka of what was then French
Guinea. Recordist Gilbert Rouget got up close and
personal with these recordings, giving them a somewhat
flat but immediate sound, emphasizing performance over
ambiance. And such performances they are!
Trios of balafons accompany a chorus of three women who
also scrape a bright sounding metallic tube for
percussive counter rhythms (sound sample). It has an
almost gamelan-like flavor, a measured chaos and energy
that is distinctive. Many of the tracks feature Mamadi
Jubate on the harp (called soron), playing an
instrument with 19 strings of gazelle skin. It's a
different sound from what you have come to recognize
via artists like Toumani Diabate, a thicker tone with
less sustain. He contributes both solo works and acts
as accompanist to some of the singers. Singers are a
major focus of this collection, notably djeli moussa
(women of the musician's caste).
One of the rare beauties of this collection is a solo
"cradle song" by Konde Kuyate (sound sample). This
praise song to a child is certainly no lullaby, sung in
a loud, full voice meant to bring blessings to calm the
child rather than to put it to sleep. In addition to
this "court music" are a number of tracks of music for
hunters played on smaller harps, lute and flutes, again
with a full bodied vocal component. The third type of
music represented in this set is what Rouget refers to
as "peasant music," lively group vocals of call and
response, percussion-driven dances and two tracks that
feature water-tuned drums.
This collection represents a pre-pop Mandinkan music,
music of Toumani Diabate's father's father, if you
will, recorded in small towns in Guinea before the
commercial recording industry brought new (and
admittedly exciting) changes to the musical landscape.
Rouget's excellent notes and photographs allow the
listener a deep look into a folk culture that
eventually exploded into a vibrant popular music scene.
