my first album.
it was made between september 1998 and december 2000. almost every
instrument or computer was borrowed except for an early portable
minidisc recorder and an electric guitar that was cheap. (by the
way the atrac compression format has greatly improved in more
recent generations so stop whining about loss of sound quality. do
a double blind test and you won't be able to tell which is
which...)
3 years of musical evolution condensed into a single album. this
includes the second track i ever did (daylight) aswell as one that
i made about two weeks before pressing. so diversity is bound to
be a keyword.
it's also been an emotionaly very unstable period in my life where
decisions have been made that will influence the rest of my and
other peoples lives. the changeover from depression to happiness.
both are present (on the album). that's an important factor and it
will no doubt have influenced me a great deal in both form and
content. therefore it's going to be different from other releases.
another key element: my lack of craftsmanship. ha! really... it
could have been a lot better sounding.. but it couldn't have been
made in a much more --free-- way.
the discovery of music like oval/microstoria, farmersmanual, ryoji
ikeda, gastr del sol, k÷hn, toss, philip jeck and many others all
at once through discovering (k-raa-k)│ via jⁿrgen de blonde and
laurent carthuyvels was one hell of a culture shock. much was
digested and pooped out in some kind of way... combined with
earlier nutrients such as einstⁿrzende neubauten, syd barrett and
pink floyd, lots of techno, richie hawtin and the nineties warp
shit like autechre and the likes.
but the biggest influence: indeed software..trying to figure out
what the hell i was doing and being lucky the minidisc was rolling
at the right times. cooledit pro 96 if you must know. i believe
that's the only software used for this cd. cut and paste.. not
generated (i had never heard of patchers!)
(k-raa-k)│ is certainly one of the best belgian labels. don't be a
stupid guy (or women) and buy the release, they need you to make
new quality releases. also check their websites there are alot of
nice live shows dates.
