paul decleine initiated the project "bruxelles nous appartient /
brussels behoort ons toe". sound memory, oral biography of the
town, this project gathers a great number of recordings of
inhabitants talking about their town. they were freely and
anonymously recorded by other inhabitants in 2 languages (french
and dutch). the collection is accessible to everyone and may be a
source of inspiration or raw materials for new artistic creations
in every artistic domain. rez-de-chauss is dominique petitgand's
interpretation of it. "dominique petitgand creates installations
and sound compositions based on the mechanisms of memory:
repetition, imprecise game of identities and structures in
connection with time and space. for the first time, he wanders
from the intimate register of his compositions and works with
voices unknown to him, those of the "babbeleers" of "bruxelles
nous appartient / brussels behoort ons toe". between the words, he
is carried away by breaths, silences, pauses, involuntary noises
and interference. rez-de-chausse is a kind of mental urban film, a
micro-universe somewhere between dream and reality"
