Live on Proton Radio (www.protonradio.com):
Leon Roberts
DJ, producer and remixer Leon Roberts was a member of
Keele University's Entertainments Committee in 1987 when
he was first approached to play some of his many
records, thus accidentally kick-starting a career that
has taken him all over the world and neatly avoided his
having to get a 'proper' job. Influenced by his regular
visits to Nude night at Manchester's legendary Hacienda,
its DJ Mike Pickering and New York's Tony Humphries,
Larry Levan and Walter Gibbons, he considers himself
fortunate to have been around at the inception of house
music in the mid 1980s and more fortunate still to be
able to keep its pioneering spirit going forward into
the 21st century.
From this inauspicious start, he stumbled his way
through many small gigs in his native Wales and North
West of England before entering the recording studio in
1992. He subsequently found himself programming and
engineering for the newly-emerging British remix set,
such as K-Klass (who enjoyed a run of success in the
early to mid 1990s with mixes for Bobby Brown, Juliet
Roberts, Frankie Knuckles etc.), T-Empo, DJ Harvey and
Bottom Dollar. This work gave him broad experience in
dance music production techniques, and led to him
branching out into productions of his own - often
alongside his brother Matthew - on projects such as
Revival 3000 (whose "Mighty High" single on Polydor was
a notable dance hit in 1997) and Funk Force (a more
underground project with releases on New York's Ultra
Records and on the Ministry of Sound's Ride label).
During this time, Leon also found time to collaborate
with LA's Doc Martin, recording Doc's debut solo single
'Never' for Blackpool's Shaboom label.
Under the Funk Force pseudonym, the brothers remixed
acts from U2 to the Sneaker Pimps, taking in Eddie
Amador's club smash "Rise" and Olive's #1 hit "You're
Not Alone" along the way - they also released the
"Change" EP as King Unique on London's Defected 1980s
and more fortunate still to be able to keep its
pioneering spirit going forward into the 21st century.
