the superlative sound of columbia masterworks speeds you on a
space journey into the year 2001 in music from the film that life
magazine called "an unprecedented psychedelic roller coaster of an
experience." then it thrusts you into the year 2038 via aniara in
exerpts from the complete recording that hifi/stereo review hailed
as "magnificent, especially in its stereophonic spatial
perspective." here--complete and joined into a sonic unity by
electronic interludes created by morton subotnik--is the music
that made "2001's" thrilling scenes even more astonishing:
the apeman's discovery of weapons and the astronaut's final
startling evolution ("also sprach zarathustra")
the voyage to the moon and the visit to the fantastic space
station ("the blue danube waltz")
the voyage of the lunar explorer team to search for the mysterious
monolith ("lux aeterna")
the space ship discovery taking the two astronauts into the
journey to jupiter ("gayne ballet suite)
the psychedelic flight through infinity that leads to the final
starling scene ("atmospheres")
like "2001," "aniara" is a story of man at the mercy of an
electronic brain and of humanity tested in the crucible of the
infinite. karl-birger blomdahl, (october 19,1969-june 17,1968)
created his prophetic opera from the story of a voyage through
space in the year 2038. on a ship speeding to mars are 8,000
people fleeing a dying swarm of shooting stars, thus dooming its
inhabitants to eternal flight through the universe in a ship of
death.
here, then, is music of yesterday, today and tomorrow--music that
blasts you through the cosmos, through the mysterious future into
the vast unknown--music for an odyssey into the endless reaches of
the universe.
