Lukas Nelson was fed up with school. It wasnÆt schoolÆs fault at allàhe just had
other plans. He wanted to play rock and roll music. So halfway through sophomore
year of college he quit. He simply stopped going to class. His mother was angry
for awhile, but she got over it. Lukas called his friends Merlyn Kelly, an
excellent bass player, and Anthony LoGerfo, an incredible drummer from the Los
Angeles area, and together they formed the band Promise of the Real. In addition
he called his longtime friend Tato Melgar, a phenomenal percussionist from
Uruguay, and his brother Micah Nelson from Austin, whom he previously shared the
stage with when he was the drummer of 40 Points, the previous incarnation of
this band. Micah now does interpretive art on stage and is created the cover for
the Promise of the RealÆs first EP ôBrandoÆs Paradise Sessionsö, on stage during
a show at the Hotel Cafe club in Hollywood.
Lukas and Anthony struck up an instant friendship at a Neil Young concert,
discovering their uncannily similar tastes in music and a mutual sense of
dedication to the spirituality of their art. AnthonyÆs background at Citrus
College of Music, under the mentorship of Alan Waddington, combined with his
roots based in rock and roll made him a fierce talent both technically and
musically. They started jamming and within weeks quickly recorded demos under
different band names. ôStart To Goö was one of the first songs they ever
recorded. For the next year, they would jam extensively at AnthonyÆs house in
Seal Beach, California. Many songs were written from hours of acoustic jamming
on the beach and in local convenience stores. ôMy Own Waveö was inspired and
written after a midnight full moon surf session.
By January 2009 Promise of the Real had a 3-week tour of Northern California.
The response was so intense they decided to record an EP. The ôBrandoÆs Paradise
Sessionsö EP was recorded, mixed and produced by John Avila (Oingo Boingo, The
Mutaytor). John Avila had been a long time friend of AnthonyÆs and was willing
to help the band with their first run at recording. He understood the raw sound
of the band. JohnÆs favorite artist was Neil Young too so it was a perfect
match. The album was recorded at AvilaÆs home studio ôBrandoÆs Paradiseö and the
name of the record is an homage to the studioÆs positive, family inspired feel
that provided a perfect setting for the band to free-flow and jam.
Promise of the Real went back out on the road in April 2009 with the legendary
B.B. King and had a great response. The band became really good friends with
B.B. and his band. So much so, that B.B. invited them back out in October and
November for a 21-date tour.
Merlyn Kelly has since left the band, and continues to be a friend and respected
peer to both Anthony and Lukas. Also a Citrus student, Merlyn was gifted in the
school of jazz and funk bass. He now works with Eliana Burki, a notable and
prolific artist from Switzerland, who is known for combining her native
traditional instrument, the Alphorn, with fusion jazz and funk. Currently
replacing Merlyn Kelly is John Paul Maramba, a gifted bass player also from
Citrus College and USC.
Since their formation in early 2009, the Promise of the Real has played with
such notable musicians as Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Toots and the Maytals and
Blues Traveler. Individually, they have performed with many musicians including
Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Billy Gibbons, Jackson
Browne, Patrick Simmons, Michael MacDonald and more. Promise of the Real
continues to be inspired by their many heroes and strive to grow musically and
personally as their journey on the earth progresses. Collectively, they believe
that life is a series of lessons in learning to let go and to believe Music to
be one of the most effective tools for allowing the soul to let go and love more
fully.
